This is essentially statistically insignificant.

Statistically a 7.8 is a huge quake no matter how you want to look at it.

I lost my home in the 6.8 quake in Northridge in 94, I saw a 2,200 square foot home turned literally 90 degrees and rested on its side in Sherman Oaks.....and still in tact.

I couldn't even imagine a 7.8

I guess maybe I react to this kind of news a little bit differently.

Not so very far from the antipode of the Mexican earthquake yesterday. Although a ways. Antipode of the Mexican quake location would be closer to, and southeast of, Madagascar.

Makes me really wonder about all that “crossing the galactic equator” and “pole flipping” stuff.

It could be the Sun’s fault. About a year or so ago scientists found a link between solar activity and EQs that occur on Earth.

The abstract you link to is from 1967, if you'd taken the time to read it.

But NASA could be full of absolute scientific nonsense, too.

Again, if you'd actually examined the page you linked to rather than getting excited by seeing "NASA" at the top, you'd see it's not NASA research or endorsed by NASA, just a search engine for searching ALL papers published anywhere on astronomy or astrophyics operated by Harvard and the Smithsonian with a NASA grant.

Hopefully you've thus learned a valuable lesson about careful research.

Please hope that the coffee bean harvest is not affected. ! I am addicted to that “Sumatra” whole bean.

oh, and spare enough workers to harvest them.

I am doing my part to aid their economy.

By statistically insignificant, I mean with a limited number of unitary events, and a yearly average of 18 7.0+ quakes , you're NOT going to steadily have 4 events or 5 events in every three month period.

You're RANDOMLY going to have, say, 6 7.0+ earthquakes in a three month period (or even, say, 7, or perhaps 8), and then perhaps in the next three months have 3 or 2 or 1.

The basic point is that, when 4.5 M 7.0+ quakes in three months is normal, and you have 6, it's not time to start planning for the Apocalypse or casting about for wacky explanatory theories.

In the past few years, there have been stretches of months on end with unusually low numbers of strong earthquakes. However, nobody starts a thread in "Breaking" entitled "NOT MANY STRONG QUAKES LATELY!"

I don’t think you need to worry too much about it - that stuff costs like $100.00 an ounce. I think.

There is no evidence that anything unusual is going on. People like to say that when there have been a bunch of high profile events - on any given subject. All of a sudden “something must be going on” This is simply not true and there is nothing to indicate that anything unusual is going on.

If it becomes unavailable try the Peruvian beans. Man am I hooked on that. However, they are getting more expensive and harder to find.

Surf's up in Australia and Hawaii.

Australia possibly. Wrong Ocean for Hawaii. Wave would be shielded by the bulk of Sumatra, and kind of messed up by the large Islands of the Indonesian archepeligo, as well as the Philipines.

Sri Lanka, Madagakar, India and the whole east coast of Africa, including Somalia and Kenya, had best be alert, if there was a Tsunami generated. Depth is shown at USGS as 19.3 miles, fairly deep. Depth at Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is deeper still, 31.1 miles. However they do seem to have issued a Local Tsunami Watch, but the link to the text is bad. But the arrival times are as indicated below:

ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES AT FORECAST POINTS WITHI THE WARNING AND WATCH AREAS ARE GIVEN BELOW. ACTUAL ARRIVAL TIMES MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. A TSUNAMI IS A SERIES OF WAVES AND THE TIME BETWEEN SUCCESSIVE WAVES CAN BE FIVE MINUTES TO ONE HOUR.

LOCATION FORECAST POINT COORDINATES ARRIVAL TIME

INDONESIA SIMEULUE 2.5N 96.0E 2244Z 06 APR
BELAWAN 3.8N 98.8E 0237Z 07 APR

I got your point I was simply saying that after living through a some what catastrophic event, I probably look at it differently.

When you have lost everything you own, do you really think a statistic matters?

I'll tell you it doesn't because it is true.

I will tell you that a 7.8 is a huge quake, no matter how you want to slice it.
