The Labor Department is encouraging low-wage and immigrant workers to turn in employers who are shortchanging their pay, as part of an expanding effort to enforce wage and hour rules.
Labor Secretary Hilda Solis launched a campaign last week called "We Can Help," asking workers in industries from construction to food services to notify the agency of suspected wage and hour violations.
The agency is also relying on tips from worker advocacy groups, widening efforts by the Obama administration to enlist activist groups to help with enforcement in a range of sectors from toy safety to distracted driving.
However, business groups are expressing concern that the Labor Department's effort will generate unfounded complaints.
Ms. Solis, a Hispanic-American, has signaled from early in her tenure that stepping up enforcement of wage and hour rules would be a high priority. The Labor Department's wage and hour division recently hired more than 250 additional investigatorsan increase of one thirdand is rolling out a publicity campaign that includes bilingual public-service announcements in Spanish and English.

But do not, under any circumstances, check to see if the workers are here illegally. What a country!
The full scale assault on Americans has begun.
Actually, a good idea.
Reduces incentive for scumbag employers to hire illegals over citizens.
If a company broke the law and knowingly hired illegals in order to save a buck, then it fully deserves to get screwed over like this.
Will the firms who did this also get slapped for hiring illegals in the first place?
The trouble is that the penalties for wage-hour are chicken feed compared to those for EEO.
Wouldn’t it be great if this was just a ruse to identify illegals and their lawbreaking employers ?
Well, if you employed illegals, you knew you were taking your chances.
Screw all such employers. They are the entities making staying here so attractive, and are protecting these same illegals in other ways to cover themselves.
Good riddance.
I say give them the back wages but mail them to their addresses in Mexico.
And if I seek American Rights I am a racist?
All illegals need to be deported or imprisoned, the border sealed, and all who try to sneak back in should receive an armed response from our government, who is supposed to be protecting us from this invasion.
employers have learned to 1099 the employee for every penny after the settlement.
What the lawyer does not take the IRS does.
The employee remains peniless.
Ding
It would be good if they did. These companies should be fined for all of the costs imposed on government by illegals. These companies are all guilty of shifting part of their labor costs onto the taxpayers. I'd make them pay for all of the "free" schooling, health care, welfare, housing assistance, etc. that these illegals cost us, and then a very hefty penalty on top of that. Suck it out of the company owners' personal bank accounts if you have to.
I would dare say half the problem of illegals is caused by all these companies that want to hire them. Get rid of the demand for illegals and that will make some dent in the supply of illegals.
So true, we have but a short time to regain this nation.
Is there a single industry left in this country that the Obama administration hasn’t set out to destroy?
Yes, yes, come forth “immigrant” workers.
Report your employers.
They’re the ones keeping your illegal alien butts here.
Sure! What the hell? Might as well.
