Study: Northeast seeing more, fiercer rainstorms ("in line with global warming predictions")
Associated Press ^ | April 5, 2010 | BOB SALSBERG

The Northeast is seeing more frequent "extreme precipitation events" in line with global warming predictions, a study shows, including storms like the recent fierce rains whose floodwaters swallowed neighborhoods and businesses across New England.

The study does not link last week's devastating floods to its research but examined 60yrs worth of National Weather Service rainfall records in nine Northeastern states and found that storms that produce an inch or more of rain in a day — a threshold the recent storm far surpassed — are coming more frequently.

"It's almost like 1 inch of rainfall has become pretty common these days," said Bill Burtis, spokesman for Clean Air-Cool Planet, a global warming education group that released the study Monday along with the University of New Hampshire's Carbon Solutions New England group.

The study's results are consistent with what could be expected in a world warmed by greenhouse gases, said UNH associate professor Cameron Wake. He acknowledged it would take more sophisticated studies to cement a warming link, though.

"I can't point to these recent storms and say, that is global warming," he said.

What is more certain, researchers said, is the potential economic impact should the 60-year trend continue and require billions of dollars in infrastructure improvements to things in the region including roads, bridges, sewers and culverts.

The study examined precipitation data from 219 Weather Service reporting stations in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont from 1948 to 2007.

The report found that in all but 18 of the stations, "extreme precipitation events," defined as storms that produced at least 1 inch of rain over a 24-hour period or the water equivalent of snow, are occurring at a more frequent rate.

Average annual precipitation in the region also increased, albeit slightly,

When you predict everything it shouldn’t be a shock when something happens that is a subset of everything.

The rains filled 200 year old flood plains. So these rains have happened 5 times since 1000 AD.

Well said.

Thanks. I can do the same thing on the economy...the stock prices will go up, and they will go down, and people will make money, and people will loose money. there will be much turmoil and much rejoicing. And on occasion, not much will happen...but that's just a sign.

I would like to see an itemized “LIST” of exactly WHAT these predictions are so I can know what to expect in the future.

When you predict everything it shouldn’t be a shock when something happens that is a subset of everything.

While we're at it, let's review some of the other climate change predictions:

Predicition: A new ice age by 2025.

Result: Not looking good for this one.

Predicition: Dramatic rises in sea levels

Result: No significant chages decades after this was first observed.

Predicition: Glaciers disappearing. Result: Some some shrinking, some advancing, as always. Nothing out of the ordinary from a 5 billion year track record.

Predicition: Extinction of apex species like polar bears. Result: No change (or else growth) in the polar bear population.

To name a few.

Probably the result of my uncaring burning of brush.

That was my initial theory. Unlike "climatologists," I need more evidence to reach a definite conclusion.

Amusing... the predictions I see in the archive of the EDF and others call for a drier Northeast.

[”If you're spending more on dealing with extreme weather events, what does that take away from?” said Ross Gittell, an economics professor at UNH and executive committee member of Carbon Solutions New England. “Do you have to tax people more and that has a damper on the overall economy?” he said. “... Or does it take away from investments in education that could lead to more productivity and economic growth over time?”]

SAY WHAT?

Oh my....

They just won’t give up will they.

We have mini-droughts sometimes that last a season or two and this also gets blamed on global warming.

Snowstorms? Proof of global warming!
No Snowstorms? Also proof of global warming!
Rain? More proof of global warming!
No Rain? Yet even more proof of global warming!

They almost can’t possibly be wrong at this point because they have blamed and predicted virtually ever single weather event on global warming.

Yet Phil Jones himself just a month ago admitted to the BBC that there has been no statistical global warming for the last 10-15 years. And, there has even been statistically insignificant global cooling for the last several years.

How do people actually believe this nonsense anymore.
