Immigration effort lacks 2nd backer from GOP (RINO McCain MIA; Cornyn, Kyl stepping gingerly)
The Washington Times ^ | 2010-04-05 | Stephen Dinan

As President Obama and Senate Democrats push to pass an immigration bill this year, one key ingredient is still conspicuously missing: a second Republican to co-sponsor the legislation.

Most Republicans considered likeliest to join Sens. Charles E. Schumer, New York Democrat, and Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, in writing a bill either have taken a pass or are still on the fence. Key figures say the country does not have the kind of consensus needed to tackle the issue.

"It just doesn't exist anymore," said Sen. Jon Kyl, the Arizona Republican who in 2007 took the lead on writing a bill with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, only to see it fail when a bipartisan majority of senators joined a filibuster against it.

Mr. Schumer and Mr. Graham are guardedly pressing ahead with a bill that would legalize illegal immigrants, establish a new system for allowing in foreign workers, and tighten controls on employment, including requiring the use of biometric identification Social Security cards.

Mr. Schumer sees a path for a bill, Mr. Graham sounds uncertain, and both of them are looking to Mr. Obama to help.

(snip)

"I'm interested in trying to find a middle ground but I don't think we're anywhere near close," Mr. Cornyn said. He also said he's been asking to see exactly what Mr. Schumer and Mr. Graham have in mind but that they haven't shown him anything.

"I don't know if that exists," he said.

“I’m interested in trying to find a middle ground but I don’t think we’re anywhere near close,” Mr. Cornyn said.

< < Another reach out across the aisle, in the spirit of bipartisanship example of the spineless OP(formerly the GOP). It’s truly astounding why people support the OP that has consistently eschewed conservative principles defies logic. > >

Man, I totally agree with you. With friends like Cornyn...

stevie_d_64, you seem to be following Cornyn’s doings. Here is a comment you may or may not already have heard.

Dont count Cornyn out...he is owned by the Mexican lobby. His main job is too keep Hispanic conservatives out of the GOP...especially the US Senate.

Trying to find the middle ground is not necessarily going to be something they (Cornyn, or any other GOP member) will actually accept...Or even agree with...

I would do this if I was in their place, but I would not just accept a “middle ground” position just because I went out to try and find one...

When they locked us out of the healthcare debate, and any input we had was summarily crushed by straight party-line votes...

Well, it seems to me that the opposition certainly doesn’t want to find any middlke ground on any issue...

So just because someone is public about seeking out something like this doesn’t mean they are going to buy it...

It may be a strategy to get them to show their cards on the issue...Without really supporting their policy or idea...

Just thinking outside the box...

I don’t understand why South Carolinians aren’t storming Lindsey Graham’s offices daily over this outrage, and forcing him to drop it.

...they haven't shown him anything.

They have to pass the bill so we can see what's in it.

I take people at their word. Cornyn says he is looking for a middle ground on amnesty. That is what he means; that is what he’s doing. If he means something else, he should say it.

“When he is re-elected, Mc Cain will jump back on the issue with both feet. Right now he has to fool a few idiots”

Right on the mark. McPain has to be eliminated. He has to be voted out by a landslide to ensure the point is well made. Heads must spin. Eyes must pop. “Shock and Awe”, and all of that stuff.

Not only McPain, but every incumbant Democrat that is up for reelection, and every other RINO like McPain as well.

Graham revels in being hated. I’ve heard him brag about being called ‘Grahmnesty.’

Really???

With a declarative statement like that, I’ll have to talk to a couple of local hispanic movers and shakers that I consider to be more conservative than a lot of folks I know...

They are certainly not quitters, and they are constantly looking to get elected to some fairly substancial offices in this state...

Namely, Roy Morales and Dorothy Olmos...I can’t wait to show them this, but then again they’ve heard worse...

But let me make sure I understand you first...You are saying that a US Senator from Texas is owned by a “liberal” group(s) of Hispanic leanings??? And one of Senator Cornyn’s jobs is to keep Hispanic conservatives out of the GOP???

Is this correct???

I agree with you...But I have a feeling that to get into an office like that you need to keep your cards safe and close...

I’m not one to say at the end of the day Cornyn will vote for Amnesty...

The question is, how can there possibly be any “middle ground’ in this issue??? Right???

You are either for it, or against it...I don’t think you can have it both ways, right???

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not chiding you or anyone on this...I’m just trying to keep my eye on the ball...

Can we have a pragmatic and intelligent discussion about immigration here?

What, truly, are we to do? What reasonable measures will stop the inflow of illegals and address the issue of what to do with those families who are already here?

I know that some wiseacre will no doubt claim that they all have to be rounded up and deported. Frankly, I would be all for that if it were achievable. But we don’t have the resources or the money or the will to do that. In reality, it simply will not happen.

So, rather than throwing bricks at every new proposal, what will work, in the best interests of this country?

Smart folks here at FR. Let’s come up with a workable plan.

Interesting blurb on Hayworth’s stand on illegal immigration, but it doesn’t say what he wants to do with those already here. Do you know?

Interesting blurb on Hayworth’s stand on illegal immigration, but it doesn’t say what he wants to do with those already here. Do you know?

Well the bill he put forth in the House of Representatives back in 2005 sheds some light:

Employer accountability

Mehlman said the bill addresses some of the major issues that fuel the growth of the undocumented population in the United States, now estimated at 10 million to 12 million people.

Hayworth’s bill would dedicate thousands of agents and local law enforcement officers to identifying and deporting undocumented immigrants, while increasing the fines for employers who flouted the law.

Under Hayworth’s bill, hiring one undocumented immigrant could result in a penalty of up to $50,000 and a jail term of up to one year.

“It actually puts some teeth into enforcement, which has been lacking for a long time,” Mehlman said.

“It creates a verifiable means for employers to check if somebody is legal to hold a job, and if they fail to observe those procedures, there is a serious fine involved.

“On the other side of the equation, it sends the message to people that if you are caught . . . you will be sent home.”

Lynn Marcus, director of the University of Arizona Immigration Law Clinic, said the proposed legislation is a “monster” with “many heads,” alluding to the number of controversial provisions.
