Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has started a program he calls "Pedal Vision," in which inmates pedal stationary bikes to generate electricity for television sets.
The bikes are customized to turn on connected TV sets once inmates at Phoenix's Tent City Jail pedal enough to generate 12 volts of electricity.
An hour of pedaling equals an hour of television.
Arpaio says inmates only will be able to watch television if they choose to pedal.
He says he started the program with female inmates because they seemed more receptive.
Arpaio says the only exercise female inmates have been getting is speed-walking around the tent yard.
He says Pedal Vision gives them a reason to get moving and a way to burn calories.
One of the mechanisms of law preventing the State from using prisoners as a resource, is precisely to prevent the State from establishing slavery. Of course, taxes more or less do the same thing, now.
ingenious. I think they should force the inmates to pedal, store the electricity somehow, and sell it on the open market.
From “green” baloney to “green” energy! Sheriff Joe is da man! He’s keeping the planet green. (Except here in the desert southwest where everything is either brown or pastel colors.)
Years ago a National Lampoon cover showed a black man on a stationary bicycle coupled to a generator powering a television set as a white couple sitting on a sofa watched. The title of that issue was “Black Power Comes To South Africa”. In smaller letters was a caption “You Bring DeBeers, Let’s Have Apartheid”. Why do I still remember this shi*?
Good for Joe! Teaching the tried and true - if you want something, you work for it.
Tired inmates are also less likely to cause trouble.
Good point.
Go JOE. Hope he runs for governor and with JD in Senate - AZ will be one kick@$$ state!
Great work again, Joe!
Too bad the reporter doesn’t understand how batteries are charged. Twelve-volt lead-acid batteries are charged by chargers putting out 13-14 volts or so. You can’t charge a battery with 12 volts. Therefore, right after the inmates start pedaling, they are putting out more than 12 volts. A battery charged to 12 volts is only about 20% or less charged. When the batteries are fully charged, their output is about 12.6 volts to as high as 13 or more.
But I don’t expect reporters to understand anything having to do with science.
Sheriff Joe - we love him like a hamster loves its wheel.
LOL! It’ll be fun to see what the pro-illegals and the Communists whine about with this!
Not a bad idea maybe there is hope for this country.
You are assuming that there are batteries. I am not sure this is the case.
Think globally, act locally.
I’m not concerned about a fit/unfit body but more concerned about an unfit mind - therein lies a problem.
Maybe he can develop a peddle power air conditioner? I love this guy!
Pray for America
This guy is too much!
I agree. Greenie lib heads are going to totally explode!!!
He must spend at least an hour a day coming up with ways to freak out libs and dems...
HAAHAHAHA!!!!
great idea.
