OAKDALE, Calif. (CBS/KOVR) Crowds of students and parents gathered around to watch an Oakdale High School freshman violently beat her classmate. Instead of calling 911, students whipped out their cell phones to record the attack. Manita Hazlewood, the mother of the victim, told CBS affiliate KOVR that her daughter didn't have a chance to fight back. "This girl was on top of her slamming her head into the ground," she said.
The flight lasted about 30 seconds but the girl was already badly beaten and suffered a concussion. A mother, who wants to remain anonymous, says she stepped in to help as she witnessed parents cheering on the attacker.
"I was very shocked. These are grown parents. This girl had enough time, and these people were right next to it," said the woman.
The victim's mother told KOVR, "She's traumatized. Not only was she beaten, it was on YouTube; there's video. I got three different versions of it."
In the recording, students can be heard egging on the attack.
Hazlewood's daughter was brought back to the school and interviewed by administrators and cops. Hazlewood is angry the school didn't call her even though her daughter was badly beaten.
Oakdale Joint Unified School District Superintendent Fred Rich told KOVR, "We try to ensure the safety. It's not always physically possible, especially if we don't know about it."
KOVR says the victim was suspended even though the video allegedly shows her to be the recipient of the attack. The other girl has reportedly been expelled.
Police are investigating. No word yet on what the fight caused the fight.
Perp is black, victim not shown, but victim’s mom is Asian.
“Thats crazy talk.”
Maybe somewhat excessive, but the premise is correct. The girl in the video said something about the other girl being treated medically. What if this resulted in something a bit more damaging than a concussion (which is, by the way, not innocuous)? Recently a high school student in Chicago died after a beating. If there are adults there and they don’t do anything to stop it (at least making the effort to call someone) what is their level of responsibility? Even worse, if they cheer on the perpetrator, what is their level of responsibility? If I were the parent of this child I would sue everyone involved, including the school district, for every dime I could possibly extract from them. There have to be consequences in a sane society.
I have always believed that a conscience must be developed in young human beings.
This is the direct result of a culture that encourages the unconscionable, has no shame, feels no remorse, and has no conflict resolution skills sans fisticuffs, often in the form of a sucker punch.
If you value the continued health of your children and want to keep them from the multicultural morass that is in many public schools, home schooling or parochial is the only way to go. Divergent value systems is not diversity; it’s suicide.
They are animals.
>>Divergent value systems is not diversity; its suicide.<<
Excellent point. Society only works when everybody shares a basic understanding of right and wrong. It’s stunning how many kids have been raised with no moral compass whatsoever, and they are truly shocked when their sociopathic ways are finally called into question.
Remember the whole “self esteem” push that was on some years back? Right around the time Oakland schools were heavily into teaching Ebonics?
Nobody had the guts to point out that true self esteem comes from self respect, which has to be earned. It cannot be bequeathed upon anyone. So now we have young toughs willing to kill someone else when they perceive that they have been “disrespected”.
Whatever happened to “sticks and stones...”?
Sounds like your school was filled with violent sociopaths just like the one in this story.
Also understand that the term “fight” implies mutual combat by willing participants. “Bullying”, by contrast, involves one or more sadists and an unwilling victim.
Have you checked into Hillsdale College? Rush, Hannity, and Levin do commercial spots for them all the time. They don't take a dime of gov't money, and don't teach from a leftist perspective, either.
“We try to ensure the safety. It’s not always physically possible, especially if we don’t know about it.”
Isn’t that special? Another bureaucrat washing his hands of any responsibility. Cue Sgt. Schulz... “I see nothing.”
Why do parents send their kids to these horrible schools? I don’t care what I had to do, there is no way I would allow my children to be traumatized, threatened, and abused every day.
I refuse to send my child to school with trash like this. The girl gangs here in NJ usually carry razor blades in their mouths. I am surprised they don’t do that in CA. At least she didn’t get cut up. Shaking my head again & thinking nothing surprises me anymore.
Likely you are saving your daughter’s life at the rate things are going.
I think so & pray each night that 0 doesn’t make home schooling illegal.
You better not put your baby in public school. I’ll come out there and steal her from you. ;^)
Rabid animals.
Do you remember the HR6 controversy when the federal government tried to regulate homeschooling?
Homeschoolers showed themselves to be a force to be reckoned with.
If they try to make homeschooling illegal, they are going to have a HUGE problem. For one thing, there’s not enough jail space in prisons to hold all the homeschoolers who will defy that order.
Homeschoolers defied social and cultural norms and the educational system and the legal system decades ago when homeschooling was illegal, and the result was that homeschooling was legalized.
Homeschoolers will do it again.
Really. You can't think of any other reason why some adults would cheer when they saw a child being beaten? You haven't been reading the news. Or maybe you're reading liberal newspapers.
I would send her to you before I would let her be put into public school & you know that. But you have to take the horse too! lol
Of course I would take the horse. It would be cruel not to provide her a way to escape. ;^)
lmao!!! You would love the horse. He has personality!
Back when I went to school, the other students would cheer on a fight. But, the adults would break it up.
That's one of the more disturbing parts of this story: the adults cheering it on.
