GOP Sees Risks in Push to Repeal Health Law

WASHINGTON -- Top Republicans are increasingly worried that GOP candidates this fall might be burned by a fire that's roaring through the conservative base: demand for the repeal of President Barack Obama's new health care law.

It's fine to criticize the health law and the way Democrats pushed it through Congress without a single GOP vote, these party leaders say. But focusing on its outright repeal carries two big risks.

Repeal is politically and legally unlikely, and grass-roots activists may feel disillusioned by a failed crusade. More important, say strategists from both parties, a fiercely repeal-the-bill stance might prove far less popular in a general election than in a conservative-dominated GOP primary, especially in states such as Illinois and California.

Democrats are counting on that scenario. They say more Americans will learn of the new law's benefits over time and anger over its messy legislative pedigree will fade. For months, Democrats have eagerly catalogued Republican congressional candidates who pledge to repeal the health care law, vowing to make them pay in November.

Republican leaders are stepping cautiously, wary of angering staunchly conservative voters bent on repealing the new law. In recent public comments, they have quietly played down the notion of repealing the law while emphasizing claims that it will hurt jobs, the economy and the deficit.

Marxists claim that under Marxism everyone receives according to his needs and contributes according to his capabilities.

In reality, under Marxism everyone receives according to whatever the entrenched party apparatchiks decide their needs are, usually sub-sustenance levels of consumption, and the same people decide what are your abilities, generally assumed to be your ability to work endlessly at whatever you are told to do without getting paid much.

My hatred of Bolshevism and Bolsheviks is not founded on their silly system of economics or their absurd doctrine of an impossible equality. It arises from the bloody and devastating terrorism which they practice in every land into which they have broken, and by which alone their criminal regime can be maintained.

Once again the OP(formerly the GOP) is showing its typical spineless side. It's all the more reason for Conservatives to push harder. It astounds me how people insist on remaining with a party that as continually eschewed conservative principles for decades.

They cannot repeal it unless they have a supermajority, which will not happen. But they can refuse to fund the bureaucracy that will be needed to implement it.

Just another leftist attempt to discourage the good guys. When your enemy (AP) is giving you advise , don't take it.

Same ol Repub cowardly BS. Not a single one of these current DC politicians have honored their oath of office. Toss out every damned incumbent at first opportunity then force the new group to put in place a way to cut the term of any SOB that doesn't follow the constitution.

Repeal it! It is a violation of everything the Founders stood for. Unconstitutional from the begining. Hold their feet to the fire and trash this trash.

Although the veracity of AP when covering Republicans is always questionable, this story underscores the dilemma conservatives face: RINO politicians that are all too willing to 'go along/get along' with Democrat big government agendas. Soon, they'll have Republican candidates campaigning on the basis that the GOP can run socialized health care better than the Democrats!

These useless politicians have to go...every one of them.

Let's start with John 'reaching across the aisle' McCain. J.D. Hayworth is a far better candidate. I only regret that a politician I admire, Sarah Palin, has chosen to endorse and campaign for the wrong man in that primary. Oh, I'm not ready to abandon one of the very few real conservatives extant, so I still support Sarah Palin - but with a bit less enthusiasm than I once did. If Hayworth wins the primary, I expect Palin will throw her full support to him. If not, I'll have to re-think my support of the former Alaska governor - and I won't be the only conservative doing that, I'm sure.

The brick that broke the bank in every country that didn’t have and then allowed an out of control government to respond to the “voice of the people and allow socialized medicine in. Once allowed in the opposition party becomes unable to shed the leviathan, called socialized medicine.

Exactly. That's the more realistic approach based on the facts that exist. They should campaign on a platform of "stopping" 0bamacare, not repealing. A supermajority for the GOP simply isn't going to happen anytime soon.

This is how we got where we are: GOP trying to out-dimocrat the dimocrats. GOP screwed around with this program, with very few exceptions, for most of my adult life. Then it took 20 years of cursed “leadership” by 2 Bushes and 1 Clinton to let in enough foreigners to tip the scales. Now the numbers will control the future, and it is not a pretty future for USA. I wonder if the politicians who presided over this murder of the USA will ever pay for it. Somehow, some day, I think they will.

The Dem-Republican Good Cop-Bad Cop con routine is the longest running, most successful play of that con anywhere in the world.

The real game is DC versus Flyover Country. It does’nt come to an end until all in Flyover Country finally get it. IMHO, they are just starting to wake up.
