YORK COUNTY, Pa. -- The York County father of a Marine who was killed in Iraq has been ordered to pay thousands in court costs for suing some protesters who picketed the funeral.

Attorneys for Al Snyder said a court of appeals ordered him to pay more than $16,000 in court costs for the Westboro Baptist Church.

I believe there’s a very old picture of Gore standing next to the Westboro patriarch, although I may be mistaken. I would hesitate to call that a “tie” in the sense of Gore approving of this church’s current activities.

Another example of why our country is sinking rapidly into a whirlpool of sh*t.

Rewind 30 or 40 years, and this protester would have had his ass kicked soundly. Now, thanks to all the lawyers, anyone can do anything they want.

I think they’re liberal plants/agent provocateurs. The sheeple will judge real Christians by what these frauds do....and that’s the plan.

Nonsense. Read up on the history of Phelps and his Church. He's a sadistic wife-beater and child-beater and started using his warped religious crap to justify that decades before anyone outside of his series of small-town residences had ever heard of him.

Also, he was admitted to West Point in 1946, but couldn't attend until the following year because he was only 16. Instead, he attended a local community college for a year, during which he had some sort of "religious experience", and lost interest in attending West Point. Instead, he enrolled at Bob Jones College (now University). He was already displaying extreme hostile and violent tendencies during a mission trip the summer before he entered Bob Jones (apparently affiliated with Bob Jones, as it was just him and two other Bob Jones students, sent to Utah to try to convert Mormons).

There's zero evidence that this criminally insane man has ever been even loosely associated with any "liberal" group or people. Posing for a picture with an unwitting Al Gore was just an attempt to look as if he had connections beyond his crazy little family "church".

Ummm, no it's not. It's financed by the proceeds (largely out-of-court settlements) from all the lawsuits Phelps files against people who try to interfere with his "preaching". In part, it's financed by taxpayers, because some of "winnings" have been paid by state and lcoal governments whose law enforcement agencies attempted to intervene in the Phelpsians' activities. In the earlier days, before Phelps went national, one of his sources of income was door-to-door candy sales that he forced his young sons to do -- they were beaten to a pulp if they didn't bring home enough cash.

The westboro satanic cult is proof that those on the political right are law abiding citizens. If the right was full of vigilantes, christian militia and violent revolutionaries, Phelps and his spawn would be dead and their ‘church’ a smoking, burned out shell. That they live is a testament of Christian charity and the adherence to turning the other cheek.

As disgusting as it is to protest a fallen soldier, is it not the protesters first amendment right to protest?

I am thrilled that efforts are being made to help the Marine’s family.

This is an instance where the judge could have and should have been more lenient on behalf of the Marine’s family considering the circumstances.

That’s hardly “deeper”. Phelps had a passing crazy notion that he’d try to legitimize himself by getting involved in a national political campaign. Anybody who makes a significant donation to any campaign can do this, get their picture taken with a candidate, host fundraisers that they organize themselves, volunteer to house travelling campaign volunteers, etc.

I’ve never seen any substantiation of Fred Phelps Jr.’s claim that he was a Gore delegate to 1988 Democratic National Convention. Every time I see that claim (including in one of the sources you link), it is either without any source indicated, or attributed to Phelps Jr. himself. I doubt it’s true, but it’s not impossible. That mentally ill crackpot Rozita Swinton, who made the hoax phone call that set off the “raid” on the FLDS compound in Texas (and had made other hoax phone calls of a smiliar nature, unrelated to the FLDS), was an Obama delegate to Colorado state Democratic convention. I don’t think there’s much of a screening process for delegates, and Topeka isn’t exactly a hotbed of devoted Democrats — the few other people who might have been interested would probably have lost interest instantly if one of the Phelps crew announced an intention to seek the position — nobody in their right mind wants to go wave pom-poms at a nominating convention badly enough to risk having their home picketed by the Phelpsians, or having the Phelpsians flie some nuisance lawsuit against them. Neither national candidates nor party big-wigs know or care who the he!! all those people waving pom-poms are.

Are you nfamiliar with the Phelpsians "protest" methods? They holler obscenities at the tops of their lungs and harass people trying to attend funerals of people who had nothing whatsoever to do with anything with Phelpsians are screaming about, and completely disrupt the funeral services.

Try getting yourself a bullhorn and standing on the public sidewalk outside a public school, and disrupting classes by bellowing about how the teachers are all "fags" and "dykes" and deserve to be killed because "God hates fags". See how long you're allowed to continue this operation.

Couldnt they get charged with disturbing the peace?

No, I am not familiar at all with any of this except this one story.

“The Tachmonites believe Phelps is “the last prophet,” with the power to determine who will be damned and who will be saved. They themselves, as followers of Phelps, also have the power to condemn souls to hell. Most people are destined for hell, but “Good Samaritans” who help the Tachmonites (for example, police officers who prevent counter-protesters from assaulting them) may be offered an indeterminate “reward” for their good conduct. “

Ya know...they have pills to cure delusions such as those , now.

[how can we petition the MSM to *stop* referring to them as Christians?]

Beats the day-to-day slogging of the rest of us producing goods to increase the gross domestic product. I’m sure they consider it the wages of righteousness.
