One week before the most solemn day in the Christian year, the city of Davenport, Iowa removed Good Friday from its municipal calendar, setting off a storm of complaints from Christians and union members whose contracts give them that day off.
Taking a recommendation by the Davenport Civil Rights Commission to change the holiday's name to something more ecumenical, City Administrator Craig Malin sent a memo to municipal employees announcing Good Friday would officially be known as "Spring Holiday."
"My phone has been ringing off the hook since Saturday," said city council alderman Bill Edmond. "People are genuinely upset because this is nothing but political correctness run amok."
Edmond said the city administrator made the change unilaterally and did not bring it to the council for a vote, a requirement for a change in policy.

Great, now Easter!!! Here’s the deal it’s a religious day just like Christmas. NO MORE PC!!!
I’ve never thought that the day our Lord was crucified should be called “good.”
Why No A Mass March In City Hall? Just Like The Civil Rights Marches. That Will Show “Em
Hope they don’t get easter eggs thrown at them.
It’s a sad day when the real headlines are more disturbed than any satire......
.
Next step: change it to a monday.....
.
What is it with Iowa anyway? Too many farm chemicals in the water? Their brains all seemed to be fried.
“Dog bites man” non-news. That sort of thing has been happening in school districts coast to coast for the past twenty years.
Now a political entity reverting from “Spring Holiday” to “Easter”—that would be REAL news.
Some say it is from “God’s Friday” (Gottes Freitag); others maintain that it is from the German Gute Freitag, and not specially English.
Judy Morrell should be out looking for a new job right now.
Yeah, they haven’t ever quite figured out that Harkin is a total fraud who slips into a flannel shirt twice a year and acts like he’s one of ‘em, while his Bahama bankers count his millions for him.
Then, they gave Barry the Kenyan the big boost he needed in the primaries. Iowa City, full of baby killers and proud of it, is his second home. What a liberal cesspool.
Iowans have always been fair minded folks. I used to be one. But, fair mindedness seems to have given way to PC run amok. God bless Steve King and the few good conservatives left in the Hawkeye state.
It was Good:
that Christ obeyed the will of the father;
that Christ was bruised for our iniquities, thus fulfilling the prophesies spoken of Him and proving He was who He claimed to be, and qualified to be what He was going to be;
that the Father laid upon Him the sins of the world, otherwise my sins would still be on my soul;
that Jesus breathed His last after saying “It is finished” and then gave up His Spirit, proof that the sins were on Him since death only comes by sin;
that the Roman soldier confirmed He was truly dead by spearing His side thus thwarting attempts by the Devil to say it was faked;
that the ground shook, the skies became dark, and the Temple curtain was torn - from the top down - thus signifying that God declared the era of the temporary, insufficient sacrificial period was over;
Yes, to me it was a Good Friday.
Would it not have been “bad” if He wasn’t crucified?
Thank you my Lord, and my God. May I never forget and take what you did for granted.
Your points are good ones, but the gospel, the “good news,” is not that Christ died, but that he rose. (I Cor. 15) He conquered death, offering us that same hope.
So shouldn’t it be Good Sunday?
I just think that the guy, probably some medieval man in fancy robes, who came up with the term “Good Friday” had a twisted view of the occasion.
Doesn’t matter. The crucifixion was most likely on Thursday anyway.
It's not. It's called 'Black Thursday'. Three days later we have Easter (Resurrection) Sunday.
Who calls it Black Thursday?
Davenport, perfect example of vapid bureaucracy. It stinks of fear.
It would make about as much sense to rename Davenport to Sofa.
I just happened upon this but it’s darn good!

In Florida, an atheist created a case against the upcoming Easter and Passover Holy days. He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians and Jews and observances of their holy days.. The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days.
The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, “Case dismissed!”
The lawyer immediately stood objecting to the ruling saying, “Your honor, How can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays...
The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, “But you do. Your client, counsel, is woefully ignorant.”
The lawyer said, “Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists.”
The judge said, “The calendar says April 1st is April Fools Day. Psalm 14:1 states, ‘The fool says in his heart, there is no God.’ Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that, if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool... Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned.
You gotta love a Judge that knows his scripture!
