Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is under pressure to beef up border security in the Southwest in the wake of Saturday's killing of a rancher in southeastern Arizona.
Three members of New Mexico's congressional delegation have asked for an increase in the Border Patrol's presence in the Boot Heel of New Mexico, about 10 miles from where the rancher was shot to death over the weekend. U.S. Sens. Jeff Bingaman and Tom Udall, along with Rep. Harry Teague, say Napolitano's agency needs to take more security steps.
And former Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo, an outspoken opponent of illegal immigration, called on Napolitano to "reject politics and do the right thing" by dispatching the National Guard to the Arizona border.

It’s going to backfire on them.
There aren’t enough of them to hold back the angered grassroots populace of the US.
“Im sick and tired of our govt taking away our freedoms but denying us security...security, the thing they are SUPPOSED to provide.”
At least Zero is keeping us safe from “Christian Militias.”
I mean, look how many ranchers and consulate employees “Christian Militias” have killed in the last month. Must be at least . . . Zero.
My thought was that some of those isolated islands off the coast of Alaska would work out pretty well. Air drop them and supplies in and let them have at it.
That would work too.
NM list PING!
A better headline would be "NM Delegation Pays Lip Service to Border Security."
They are all Democrats who will react to the moment with hand-wringing but turn around and support benefits and rights for illegals. Hypocrites of the first degree. And Teague is using the incident to beg for more money. Tancredo is the only one who believes in taking real action.
If life were fair only the people who should be securing our border but refuse to would be negatively affected but of course, life is not fair.
The cartels have bought so much of our government that it really doesn’t matter how the public feels. When illegal immigration opponents can afford to pay a billion dollars in counter-bribes, something might get done.
These poor illegal immigrants are just killing people Americans aren’t willing to kill......
Ping!
Thanks for the ping, HiJinx. Condolences to the murdered rancher’s family and friends. Great thread. Thanks to all posters.
Stupid question here. I thought the National Guard was under the authority of the Governor of the State they are in. Why do we have to wait for Nappy’s approval? Can’t Jan Brewer give the order?
You’re asking the wrong person. I don’t have a clue so no, it’s not a stupid question.
Now the vote is 76% for “All of the above”, with 29,267 total votes.
Maybe you can answer my question at 31?
Jan Brewer can call out the state’s NG units for things like riot control, disaster relief, etc. I think this qualifies.
However, if the Governor activates the Guard, then the State pays for it. If the Feds call out the Guard, the financial burden shifts to them.
This was one of the reasons Napolitano forced the issue on her watch.
I have emailed and called their offices many times about border issues. Most of the time I don't get any answer to my emails and on the telephone they act like they either don't believe me or could care less about border issues.
The politicians just want this incident to go away ASAP so they can pursue amnesty and open borders. Running their mouth with their "concern" is just a way to convince many voters that they are handling the situation. I hope people won't let this incident just "go away" ever. The border mess is not being handled by anyone in spite of Janet from another planet saying just the other day that the border is secure.
Thank you. That makes sense. If Brewer would put them down there, I think the money spent would balance with the money saved by the illegals not being here to soak up welfare services.
Long-term gain on an immediate investment.
I’m sure you’ve driven I-10 through Marana. Have you noticed the sound-proofing barrier between the Interstate and Marana High School? That’s a 30-40 foot high wall and probably went up in a week or less.
Wonder why we can’t do that on the border, as well? No money? Nope. No skilled labor? Nope. No political will? Yeah, there ya’ go.
Even if it took 50 years to build it, it would be worth it. DH has started carrying again and wants me to. Until something like this happens we all tend to sit back and pretend we are safe. Truth is we haven't been safe for some time; from criminal illegals or our own government.
I'm afraid you're right. More and more illegals are coming into and/or through town, and the PD can't be everywhere.
