ADRIAN, Mich. – The FBI said Sunday that agents conducted weekend raids in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio and arrested at least three people, and a militia leader in Michigan said the target of at least one of the raids was a Christian militia group.

FBI spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said there had been activity in two southeast Michigan counties near the Ohio state line. She wouldn't say whether they were tied to the raids in the other states.

Michael Lackomar, a spokesman for the Southeast Michigan Volunteer Militia, said one of his team leaders got a frantic phone call Saturday evening from members of Hutaree, a Christian militia group, who said their property in southwest Michigan was being raided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

"They said they were under attack by the ATF and wanted a place to hide," Lackomar said. "My team leader said, 'no thanks.' "

In Michigan, police swarmed a rural, wooded property around 7 p.m. Saturday outside Adrian, about 70 miles southwest of Detroit, said Evelyn Reitz, who lives about a half-mile away. She said several police cars, with lights flashing, were still there Sunday evening and 15 to 20 officers were stationed in the area.

"They're your average, nice neighbors," Holtz said. There were rumors about ties to a militia, but Holtz she knew nothing of that from her interaction with them.

One of the raids in Ohio occurred at Bayshore Estates, a trailer park in Sandusky, a small city on Lake Erie between Toledo and Cleveland, park manager Terry Mills said. Authorities blocked off the street for about an hour Saturday night, he said.

"Needless to say, this has everyone talking," said Mills, 62. "We have a lot of retirees here who don't want all this commotion."

I don't know the details in the case yet. Maybe the FBI had probable cause, maybe not. But I do think the timing is interesting, coming right after the healthcare debacle when there is a lot of anti-government sentiment in the air. I think this is the Obama administration firing a shot across the bow of the the tea party folks and other conservatives, "If you're thinking of taking the next step and forming an armed militia, this is the constant harassment your going to be in for."

And what's the deal about the Muslim that is leading this other "militia group"? Shouldn't the government be more interested in a Muslim that is charge of an armed group on American soil?

Reporters, as such, don't exist any longer, I've concluded. 24 hours after this story happened not one major media outlet has managed to put together a coherent story that answers the basics of journalism. Who,What,Where,When and Why.

Even if FedGov is doing a 'no comment' schtick they should be telling us who won't comment. They should be telling us who is arrested, they should be figuring out what jails the arestees have been taken to.

Old school beat reporters were masters of this. They bought lunch for jail guards so they could get in to talk to arrested prisoners. They had police scanners. They talked their way into stuff. They went to the bars that SWAT teams were doing their wind-downs at.

Instead we get nothing. Incoherent parts of stories, comments from people with the most tangential connection to what is going on.

It's pathetic.

Someone should start a real newspaper. I would pay to read it.

And what's the deal about the Muslim that is leading this other "militia group"?

Who says he's a muslim? There's no such animal as "islamic descent" and being generations removed from the middle east doesn't make him Muslim. Could be that the Michigan Militia isn't as racist as the media keeps telling us

Ive been watching this all day and I think the Hutaree group are either the dumbest militia ever or were trying to set up the legit Michigan Militia by bring the feds to their doorstep.

Think about it, you're being raided by the FBI so you're going to go hide on another militia group's property? And how does one manage to make a phone call in the middle of an FBI raid?

found here:

A domestic terror investigation spanning the Midwest from Ohio through Michigan across Indiana and into Illinois has occupied hundreds of federal law enforcement agents this weekend.

I'd say at least tens of thousands considering they had two satellite trucks, portable antenna tower, helicopters, etc.

They went to the bars that SWAT teams were doing their wind-downs at.

you’d have thought that after the Branch dividians.Koresh, Waco, Ruby Ridge, these idiots would have gotten the message.....nope, just as stupid as they were then!!!

They got the message all right. No federal agent did any time despite the murder of a woman holding an infant(Ruby Ridge), and 90 men, women and children (Waco). In fact, those involved were promoted.

Waco taught me the true character of our government, and I haven't forgotten it.

Another reason for Obama's Afghan visit? He was expecting fireworks with the militia raids? Anyway, a warning shot across the bow. It will have no effect! Keep planning, meeting, practicing, preparing. Do all you can to prepare. . . . .

I looked at their website where there was link to the forums. Only one of them is public and has been very acrive in the last day. I looked through them to the older posts and there seems to have been an argument over comments to a video posted on YouTube that degenrated into threats in February. It looks like someone in the group tried to calm things down but there was still an issue. This is conjecture on my part, but it might have has something to do with the raids. Among the forums, that I couldn’t look inside, was one called “The Evil Jew.”

I have a problem with anyone being arrested simply by enjoying privlages and immunities provided in the constitution and because of that I’m against what happened to them, but that is the only reason. It looks to me that they weren’t acting like militia, but rather a group of armed thugs who threated someone for enjoying their own freedom of expression.

Our rights also come with responsibilities and didn’t look like those responsibilites were being taken seriously. I have no problem turing it into a suppression of dissent issue, but while that is going on, I won’t be losing sight that these guys don’t represent my values and I’m not on their side with the exception of violation of the privlages and immunities.

Read this follow the links.

I can find absolutely nothing about why these folks were raided and arrested beyond the extremely vague “gun charges.”

This is indeed very odd.

WOW! Gun charges? Who’d thunk that a militia would have guns?

Yes, it’s sarcasm.

It’s not adding up. Something is off. If the feds went to all the expense and trouble to raid this place why is the result only 3 gun charges?

I noticed that no specific charges were cited in the article. I wonder what the actual charges are.

They were heavily armed with Bibles?
