For the past five years a group of dedicated New Mexicans have worked to secure New Mexico the name of the Navys newest Virginia-class attack submarine.
On Saturday, that happened at a ceremony in Norfolk, Virginia. The USS New Mexico was officially commissioned by the United States Navy.
The 134 man crew boarded the $2.3 billion sub after it was deemed ready for combat duty.
The USS New Mexico wont only carry the Land of Enchantments name, curtains on the bunks are made from Native American prints, and one New Mexico congressman says there are some more pieces of New Mexico that can be tasted on board.
A lot of New Mexicans worked really hard to make this happen and to make sure that crew is stocked up with plenty of New Mexico salsa and other things to make sure they know we're thinking about them out there," Congressman Martin Heinrich said. (D New Mexico)
The 377-foot, 7,800-ton nuclear submarine is hailed as one of the most technologically advanced war machines on the planet. The USS New Mexico can dive deeper than 800 feet and cruise at speeds faster than 25 knots.
"Amazing piece of technology," Congressman Heinrich said.
This isnt the first USS New Mexico. A battle ship served the navy from 1918 to 1946. The Navy says they expect this new USS New Mexico to also serve for the next 30 years

La Raza is already claiming it’s theirs.
I have read on another post that there is Aztec print curtains hung on the sailor’s rack and the cooks prepare authentic Mexican cuisine.
OK, WHERE are the PICTURES?
There’s a big difference between Mexican food and NEW Mexican food.
Never understood why they would name ships after states that are hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean;)
:)) THANKS!
Thanks for posting that up.
There is an increasing chance that some of our submarines afloat today will eventually see combat. The reason being is that there has been a huge proliferation of capable combat submarines in the world. Some 30 countries now have them
Many of these are new model German and Swedish built diesel electric, air independent boats that are particularly quiet and hard to detect. And while the offspring of the submarine detection system called SOSUS, the Integrated Undersea Surveillance System (IUSS), is particularly capable at detecting submarines, there is still a strong chance for some submarine warfare in the future.
Pretty cool, but real submarines are named after fish.
WTF?
Good question! My son(himself of the Dolphin tribe) shuttled dignitaries to the launch site; said it was a hoot! That’s a big boat!
NM list PING!
(Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list)
Theres a big difference between Mexican food and NEW Mexican food.
That’s for sure, and I’ll take the New Mexican.
It will cost 4 times as much to run as the other ones, there will be twice as many support personnel, there will be a lot of dead people voting on how to run it and the captain will have 7 DWI’s.
Yup. New Mexican food is pretty much going to kill me, but it will be worth it.
