Sneaky: Obama Makes 15 Appointments without Senate Approval
Newsmax ^ | MARCH 27, 2010 | Newsmax

Fed up with waiting, President Barack Obama announced Saturday he would bypass a vacationing Senate and name 15 people to key administration jobs, wielding for the first time the blunt political tool known as the recess appointment.

The move immediately deepened the divide between the Democratic president and Republicans in the Senate following a long, bruising fight over health care. Obama revealed his decision by blistering Republicans, accusing them of holding up nominees for months solely to try to score a political advantage on him.

"I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government," Obama said in a statement.

The 15 appointees to boards and agencies include the contentious choice of union lawyer Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board. Republicans had blocked his nomination on grounds he would bring a radical pro-union agenda to the job, and they called on Obama not to appoint Becker over the recess.

Obama went ahead anyway, while also choosing a second member for the labor board so that four of its five slots will be filled. The board, which referees labor-management disputes, has had a majority of its seats vacant for more than two years, slowing its work and raising questions about the legality of its rulings.

.....Its not sneaky....

Correcto. Bush did it many, many times. If you control the Senate and the Presidency you can do it legally and ethically.

“The appointments expire at the end the next legislative session, which in this case means the end of 2011.”

Even before these 15 appointments, he already appointed more people during recess periods than Bush did in his 8 years. There was a story on this here recently about it.

For one year. But he could technically do the same thing next year. Just never send them up for confirmation and then re-appoint them during the next recess time a year from then.

Course when Bush did it Dems screamed and bitched and the press harped about it for days.

ALso Barry’s had more recess appointments in the first 16 months than Bush had across all 8 years.

PLus Bush did it mainly for midlevel positions, BArry’s done it for high level positions.

You can’t just gloss it over with a “Bush did it too”. Apples and oranges - proof in the details above.

The New York Times on recess appointments (2006)

For What It’s WorthMarch 27, 2010...8:08 pm
The New York Times on recess appointments

Of course, that was then: This from 2006 – doubtless we can expect the same editorial tomorrow.

Seizing the opportunity presented by the Congressional holiday break, Mr. Bush announced 17 recess appointments — a constitutional gimmick that allows a president to appoint someone when Congress is in recess to a job that normally requires Senate approval. The appointee serves until the next round of Congressional elections.

This end run around Senate confirmation was built into the Constitution to allow the president to quickly fill vacancies that came up when lawmakers were out of town, to keep the government running smoothly in times when travelers and mail moved by horseback and Congress met part time.

Modern presidents have employed this power to place nominees who ran into political trouble in the Senate. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton made scores of recess appointments. But both of them faced a Congress controlled by the opposition party, while the Senate has been under Republican control for Mr. Bush’s entire five years in office.

In some cases, Mr. Bush has used the recess appointment power to rescue egregiously bad selections that would never pass muster on grounds of experience and competence. (Remember last year’s recess appointment of the undiplomatic and Congressionally unacceptable John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations.)

Has it occurred to you yet that God may be allowing this affirmative action thug-in-chief to destroy the America which didn’t stop the slaughter of 50 million of God’s given alive unborn? We the people are reaping what we have sown, in one fashion or another. A nation started under God which slides into slaughtering innocent alive unborn children for expediency is a nation no longer under God but under demonic powers.

We should send them to Washington DC to straighten out all our problems and root out the commies. The war in Afghanistan would be better served if real Americans were making the decisions back home.

He is owned by the Marxists and Wahabbi Islamists that paid for his education and orchestrated the dirty fund raising and electioneering that put him in office. His allegiance to directly to them.

I thought Bush made 156 recess appointments. What are the totals you refer to and where did they come from?
