Fed up with waiting, President Barack Obama announced Saturday he would bypass a vacationing Senate and name 15 people to key administration jobs, wielding for the first time the blunt political tool known as the recess appointment.
The move immediately deepened the divide between the Democratic president and Republicans in the Senate following a long, bruising fight over health care. Obama revealed his decision by blistering Republicans, accusing them of holding up nominees for months solely to try to score a political advantage on him.
"I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government," Obama said in a statement.
The 15 appointees to boards and agencies include the contentious choice of union lawyer Craig Becker to the National Labor Relations Board. Republicans had blocked his nomination on grounds he would bring a radical pro-union agenda to the job, and they called on Obama not to appoint Becker over the recess.
Obama went ahead anyway, while also choosing a second member for the labor board so that four of its five slots will be filled. The board, which referees labor-management disputes, has had a majority of its seats vacant for more than two years, slowing its work and raising questions about the legality of its rulings.

I think Obama is going to send more of our troops in...Our sons and daughters, knowing these are mostly conservative, God Loving, Country Loving Americans......
What better way....then to send them all to a war...he will not support with money?
It’s not sneaky nor a blunt political tool.
Elections have consequences.
Done on a Saturday and announced on the news (HearBS radio) like it was an announcement of what he had for dinner. Just a perfunctory mention that the appointments had been held up by (evil) Republican senators.
All combat operations are sceduled to cease in Iraq come August. He’s pulling out thousands of troops from Iraq.
Under the cover of darkness ...
Just heard 30,000 more going to Afghanistan!
It’s the Chicago thug way.
The sticking point is that he declared Afghanistan was the just war, Iraq wasn’t. But, I don’t trust him as CinC. I trust the generals and the troops completely, and I pray they succeed and are kept safe.
In this case, I think it's mainly due to the fact that so much time has been wasted on passing the health-care bill (I use the term loosely).
Sneaky: Obama Makes 15 Appointments without Senate Approval

Aren’t ‘recess appointments” only temporary?
Does anyone know the estimated cost in dollars resulting from the 9/11 terrorist attack? We have lost some of our freedom due to that attack in an attempt to deter additional attacks. But, in my humble opinion, Obama has done more damage to our country, our economy, and our freedom than the 9/11 event and Obama is not finished attacking us. His goal, in his own words, is to fundamentally alter everything about the USA. Many in his administration want to bring about the destruction of this Republic. I pray that God will intervene and bring about the destruction of all the enemies of our Republic. I pray that prayer every night. It is not in my makeup to ever try to do harm to anyone. I have neither the resources nor the physical ability to do any act of violence since I am 67 years old and pretty much disabled but I certainly can and will continue to pray for the demise of the people who are destroying our republic.
And what government would that be? Not the government of the United States, that's for sure.
In comparison, OBL is nothing.
The appointment is good only to the end of the current congress. January 2011 BUT Becker can do a lot of damage between now and then, by design.
15 more marxists?
Appointing the 15 is so much in accord with Islamic grievance political tacticry...is Hamas writing his script?
Regarding withdrawals. NATO cannot fill the void of a US withdrawal, and Islamic/Arab rescidivism will manifest itself immediately. The US presence is a thin, temporary veneer, and, the concept of withdrawal says as much as we have not been there long enough and the ME millieu Iraq swins in is nothing if not shark infested. We have not cleared the sharks.
Turkey has not forgotten for a second, its Ottoman Empire, its Caliphate. Iran and Syria will become more active. Not taking out Iran, alone, guarantees complete wastage of US efforts, and, pulling out of Afganistan will show no positive result there either.
Geopolitical subduction or destruction of Israel has only negative results for Islamic and Non-Islamic interests (without Israel to unite Arab and Persian competing Islamic interests, they will fall out against each other without Israel as a diversionary focus except for their common interest in furthering their prominent footholds in the US symbolized by two American Presidents from two political parties bearing Saudi Medallions about their necks).
Financially, the US cannot afford to stay in either place, cannot fund our social or pension programs, and has not dealt with reality in a competent manner. So certain ME games, in spite of the excellence and valor of our military are so wasted.
Political and financial inadequacies are defining the future acutely at present, and in ways and manner not in keeping with our past. We, as a country, are like a comatose ICU patients waking up in a startling moment of clarity just as the respirator is unplugged....can we remain plugged in and make a recovery? The Tea Parties are saying...YES. They had better be proved right.
"I simply cannot allow partisan politics to stand in the way of the basic functioning of government," Obama said in a statement.
Uh ... Barry ... weren't you the one demanding that Congress concentrate on getting the health care bill through? And didn't that get in the way of everything else?
Idiot.
