Cambridge will turn off all nonessential lights in municipal buildings for one hour Saturday, starting at 8:30 p.m., in support of Earth Hour.
Turning out the lights for Earth Hour is intended to serve as a call for action on climate change and to symbolize a positive impact can be made by working together.
The city will turn out non-essential lights for one hour, and residents are encouraged to do the same Saturday at 8:30 p.m.
This year is the third year of the Earth Hour event which attracted more than 80 million participants in the U.S. last year, and nearly a billion people around the world, as lights dimmed on such global icons as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sydneys Opera House, the Great Pyramids of Giza and New Yorks Empire State Building.

If it wasn't so risky I'd drive up on Sharps Ridge and snap pictures of downtown Knoxville at 8:45 especially the TVA Towers and bank buildings, post them on the web, and show the Pagan Moon-bats turning their lights off the rest of the sane world doesn't.
Turning lights off in commercial buildings for an hour is an exercise of futility will likely cause more power to be expended getting them all back on. Turning off such electricity using machinery as commercial air conditioning units will use even more upon start up. I wish I didn't have to retire when I did. I could have easily used about 1000 amps at work for this solemn occasion.
The manufacturer of my generator say to fire it up for 1 hour every month, with 1/2 load on it.
Tonight's the night for this month with flood lights providing the load.

My question to tmhighsmith@vcu.edu>
Subject: Earth Hour
I am in Missouri, what time do I turn my lights on/off?

Her reply
Hi - the earth hour website says 8:30pm local time.
It's pretty neat to check out the pictures after the fact on the earth hour website
Have a great weekend!

I wonder are they shutting down the Earth Hour web site for an hour in each of the 24 time zones around the world?
Me? Now I know to turn on those search lights at 8:30PM the Political Correct local time.
This is so stupid! The kids came home from school last year talking about this so what did we do as a family? We turned EVERYTHING on - all the lights, the washer and dryer, the dishwasher (that was empty), all the ceiling fans, all TVs and radios, all computers, the cars in the driveway - everything that uses any kind of energy. I noticed there were no houses in our neighborhood that were lights-out, but there were several that were lit up like Christmas trees :)
“Im a-gonna turn every light in the house on, just to do my part to make up for it!”
Ditto. I have burned out bulbs which will be replaced before the “all lights on” time.
It’s more remarkable what they are not being taught: reality, in that having a civilized infrastructure whereby the lights are on when needed is a result of “people working together and making a difference.” Maybe they could learn more about say, North Korea and how they operate. What do you suppose someone without electricity is going to think about these folks?
I’m all for people learning how to do without, say by really going camping or something similar at home, to ponder how difficult everyday tasks can be - so as to more appreciate what they have, and take care of it, and not waste it. I wonder how many parents have thought about turning off the water heater for a couple days, if they own any teenagers. Just turning the lights off for an hour isn’t productive in that vein. How about turn off the furnace in January up north, so the kiddies can learn how pipes freeze and spew more cold water over everything?
Energy can’t be “saved” in this instance. That’s the reality the kiddies need to be taught. There must be base load (read constant) capability that can only be supplied by coal, nuclear, hydro, etc, in any meaningful practical way. I’m all for reducing the utility bill if necessary but that’s about it. As a country/society we need to build more power plants and improve the transmission infrastructure, not stunts like turning off the lights.
ALL LIGHTS ON? Check. A/C on? Check. Dryer on? Check. Oven On? Check. Happy Green Pagan Night. Full Moon for the Moonbats to howl at.
Good call on the dryer — my A/C is broken but I can fire the dryer up.
I ran a bunch of hot water also. Hot Water heaters draws as much current as a dryer and longer :>}
