Injecting Race Into Texas Politics - Hurd v. Canseco
Trevino's Blog - Texas GOP Vote ^ | 12 Mar 2010 | Fernando Trevino

While Will Hurd is a good guy, this is not his fight. Thankfully, Quico Canseco not only has the work experience needed to bring jobs and prosperity to CD23, but he also has the surname that many Hispanics are looking for. Hispanics are a proud people, and considering that only about 4 percent of elected officials are Hispanic nationwide, it is a real task for us to vote against an incumbent Hispanic, even though we are natural conservatives who are just waiting for the Republican Party to accept us and our values with open arms.

It broke my heart to read this article/endorsement. I live in San Antonio and am bilingual. I'm also Anglo. Trevino's bleak assessment that Texas 23 can only be won by somebody with a latino surname sticks a knife in my gut. I refuse to believe that conservatives can only win if they're latino. Maybe I have more faith in Mr. Trevino's ethnic compadres than he does...

From the article:

"...Hispanics are a proud people..."

That statment, in itself, is racist on many levels.

If the GOP doesn't understand that race is a HUGE factor for so many voters, they will continue to lose the elections where this is a deciding factor. I believe voting based on ones ethnicity or skin color is misguided at best and vile racism at its worst . . . but political realities don't necessarily follow what I believe.

Everyone knows 'good looking', fit, well-dressed, well-spoken politicians have an advantage over those who aren't. If looks matter that much and we accept it, why would skin tone, accent, or an "ethnic" last name not be something to consider when choosing a candidate also?

Sickening, isn’t it? I’ve decided to actively campaign for Hurd - first time I’ve ever done so.

"Sooooo.... voting FOR someone because of their race is not racist. "

Of course not.

95% of black Americans voted for Obama strictly based on his positions on the issues.

And if you believe that he has a brand new shiny object to dangle in front of you to keep you distracted while he dismantles the Constitution.
