Republican Candidate Defends 'Buckwheat' Comment (Unmentioned in story, he's black too)
cbs 4 ^ | Mar 24, 2010 | Jorge Estevez

Posted on 03/25/2010 6:35:55 AM PDT by tlb

MIAMI (CBS4) ;

A local Republican running for office in November is already involved in controversy. Corey Poitier, who is running for a congressional seat, is taking heat for comments he made that have been interpreted as racist against President Barack Obama.

"They are portraying me in the media as I should have a white hood on," said Poitier, to CBS4's Jorge Estevez at a coffee shop in Miami-Dade.

Poitier is accused of racism for comments made surrounding President Obama's new health care plan.

"Since it started in the Senate, to me, it is unconstitutional," said Poitier, referring to the Health Care Reform law. "Therefore, I believe it is illegal. Then I said these words, which were mine, 'Listen up Buckwheat, you did it wrong.'"

Critics thought Poitier was comparing President Obama, who stood behind the bill, to the character made famous on the Little Rascals TV show, and then immortalized by Eddie Murphy on Saturday Night Live.

"Can you understand how people would think that you called President Obama, Buckwheat?" asked CBS4's Jorge Estevez.

"I can understand that because I am a rational man, but to me it is such a stretch. I never said President Obama in the same breath as I was saying Buckwheat," said Poitier. He said the comment had nothing to do with the President.

"It means dummy or silly. To me that was it. There was no racism, involved," said Poitier.

He can’t be racist, he’s black. Only whites can be racist.

Al Sharpton call your office.

No more apologies.

"I can understand that because I am a rational man, but to me it is such a stretch. I never said President Obama in the same breath as I was saying Buckwheat,"
Where is the apology? Sounds to me like he is saying that all these media-whores trying to cast a racist angle to his comments are a bunch of idiots.

Sorry I wasn’t clear. This guy did it right. He didn’t apologize. But there are a lot of people out there who continue to walk on eggshells and apologize for anything related to race. My feeling is that Leftists lose the game as soon as they play the race card. It’s time to mock them for it, not apologize in response.

I regularly refer to egregious US Representative Alcee (Impeached-and-Removed-Federal-Judge) Hastings as “Buckwheat.”

Just keep repeating to yourself “The left is not insane”.

After all, if you repeat a lie enough times it eventually becomes true.

Come on “unmentioned” in the story?

Why would they mention black when there’s a picture of Poitier accompanying the article, and the TV report (which is embedded in the article) interviews Poitier. Obviously he’s black... there’s no need to mention it in article.

I’m all for exposing journalistic bias, but c’mon...

I don’t understand why the name “Buckwheat” is so offensive to some Blacks. He was a member of The Little Rascals. I never saw any racism in any of the shows. Race didn’t even enter into it.

I have a friend who was called Buckwheat, Buck for short. I knew he hated to be called that so I didn’t.
