Speech Hate

Intolerance: Those who say "it can't happen here" to the bully-boy tactics that prevent "hate speech" in Canada haven't been paying attention. It does happen here, the First Amendment notwithstanding.

You don't have to love what Ann Coulter says, or the incendiary way she says it, to be on the side of the best-selling conservative author when it comes to the blatant discrimination she suffered north of the border this week.

Left-wing demonstrators at the University of Ottawa made it impossible for Coulter to speak there Tuesday night.

But the menacing crowd might have been small enough to handle had it not been stirred up by a high-profile e-mail warning to Coulter by the school's provost, Francois Houle, last Friday.

Houle invited her "to educate yourself, if need be, as to what is acceptable in Canada and to do so before your planned visit here."

Coulter turned the tables, announcing she will file a complaint with Canada's Human Rights Commission alleging hate speech, charging Houle's warning unfairly singled her out as a conservative, a Christian and a woman.

She's only the latest victim of Canadian intolerance. Columnist Mark Steyn, who frequently appears in IBD, was dragged into a government investigation after a Muslim group complained about an excerpt from his book "America Alone" in Maclean's magazine in 2006. Steyn had argued the West was suffering "civilizational exhaustion" in the face of a demographic threat from Muslims.

Typical of Canadians ~ rather than to face up to a free speech situation they resort to murder.

Like Ann Coulter, many of us conservatives are feeling a hotter bullseye on our backs than before. I don’t trust the majority party and the Executive branch at all, and I would not put anything past them. “Hate speech” is the tool they will use to silence people like me... and likely you.

Canada doesn’t have a 1st Amendment.
That’s the U.S Constitution.

Even if Canada did have a law similar to our 1st Amendment, it wouldn’t apply to Coulter because she is not Canadian.

If Coulter doesn’t like Canada’s laws, she shouldn’t go there. Criticize them from here.

A country’s laws apply to its CITIZENS.

Let’s be careful here ... othewise we will be asked to provide the same rights to non-citizens as we do to citizens ... oh wait, that’s already happening.

Coulter didn't need to say a word!

The despicable actions of the Canadians who threatened her with physical harm speak volumes!

Much like their evil American counterparts, these liberal University of Ottawa college students are reminding the world of another of history's young idealists - Hitler's Youth Corps.

I know she was invited and I did not say, imply or even hint she did anything wrong.

My point is, when you are in a foreign country, you must obey THEIR laws. Your USA rights do not follow you around the world. Likewise, when non-US citizens visit our country, they must obey our laws ... and they are not granted our citizen rights.

This line should bright and crisp ... not be blurred.

Citizenship has meaning and we should do NOTHING to imply otherwise.

You’re off topic. You deflate the whole point of the discussion. Was that your plan?

Alas, Canadians receive American TV broadcasts.

They are part of the conversation. They should not be allowed to exempt themselves from appropriate retorts.

BTW, about 99% of the problem the Canadians had was that Ann appears to have made a smart alec response to a young Moslem lady who found it "reprehensible" for Ann to dare mention Islam and Homosexuality in the same sentence.

Is it "reprehensible" to mention homosexuality with islam IN CANADA?

Or is that IN PAKISTAN, SAUDI, JORDAN, SYRIA, ......etc. I believe there are 57 states where Sharia law is in effect. No person in any of those states would dare mention homosexuality in the same context as islam.

They kill people for that.

We cannot help but observe that yesterday Canadians tried to murder Ann Coulter because some Moslem girl said it's "reprehensible" to mention islam and homosexuality in the same sentence.

Doesn't anyone ever read these articles fully?

This is all about Canadians trying to enforce Sharia law on foreign visitors.

I think we need to talk to their government and maybe send in some big guns (when we get a new President).

Ease up. I live in ottawa. Nobody tried to kill ann coulter. She could beat up any of those pablum brained, pierre trudeau charter toting, naive suckholes at Ottawa U any day of the week. They are what she said. An embarrassment. It is a bush league school. The muzzie should have taken a flying carpet and as coulter said the most protected people in the pathetic province of ontario are visible minorities and especially burkha clad muslims. Ontario is a joke ran by a liberal premier more interested in giving canadians of convenience everthing at the expense of the hard working tax payer. Coulter should have known better than to come to pathetic ontario. It is like vermont or wherever that goon ward churchill or bill ayers are from. She will be treated well in Calgary.

Could be. Still, the mob were armed with sticks and stones. You can kill with a stone. I have no doubt they were serious ~ as only Canadians can be.

No, and it’s not off topic.

No U.S.A citizen gets U.S.A 1st Amendment rights when off of U.S.A territory.

I think Canada’s ‘hate speech’ laws are beyond stupid ... but that’s their business. I’ve spoken to many Canadians who think our 1st Amendment is ludicrous ... but that’s not their business either.

I don’t see a problem with a country in reminding a foreign visitor of their laws. I do see a problem going into a foreign country with the intention of disobeying their laws ... no matter how stupid they might be.

If Canadians are trying to enforce Sharia law on foreign visitors ... that’s their perogative.

If they are indeed doing that, perhaps we should let the world know about it so people will think twice before visiting a country with such assinine laws. I know I will.

I think that’s the case. The Canadians need to show us that they have a government that can and will protect foreign visitors ~ else, it’s just another Mexico.

This thread isn’t about our opinion of or Ann obeying Canadian law. That is so not the issue.

It is about a hate crime committed in Canada against Ann Coulter. They were caught redhanded.

Again, that will be up to Canadians to decide.
Canadians make Canadian laws.

We already know Canadian hate crimes laws are enforced in a biased manner prejudicial to whites and Christians ... that’s nothing new. I guess Coulter is belaboring that point ... which is her perogative. But it would be more effective if a Canadian did it, since Canadian citizens are covered by Candian law. USA citizens are not.

The harm done is that Coulter is blurring the lines of citizenship and what that means vis a vis the law.

Mark Steyn’s case makes a better point since he IS a Canadian citizen. STEYN should file a hate crimes case against his government. An American citizen should not.

No, I’m making a point. Forcefully. Like Coulter does.

Look, I don’t want some person from Malawi coming to the USA and then suing someone for discrimination under our Civil Rights Act. That is exactly analgous to what Coulter is doing in Canada.

She, of all people, should understand how important it is to not blur the lines of citizenship.
