(CNSNews.com) -- House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) said the good and welfare clause gives Congress the authority to require individuals to buy health insurance as mandated in the health care bill. However, there is no good and welfare clause in the U.S. Constitution.
During an interview Capitol Hill Friday, CNSNews.com asked Rep. Conyers, The individual mandate in the bill requires individuals to purchase health insurance. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has said that never before in the history of the United States has the federal government required any one to purchase any good or service. What part of the Constitution do you think gives Congress the authority to mandate individuals to purchase health insurance?
Conyers said: Under several clauses, the good and welfare clause and a couple others. All the scholars, the constitutional scholars that I know -- Im chairman of the Judiciary committee, as you know -- they all say that theres nothing unconstitutional in this bill and if there were, I would have tried to correct it if I thought there were.

This coming from the husband of a recently convicted felon.
Lord help us all!
This coming from a liar and a thief.
Conyers would better spend his time preparing for incarceration.
“However, there is no good and welfare clause “
Yes there is, it is right between the abortion and reparations rights clauses.
I think we either need to find a conservative organization that already supports a constitutional convention or start one - funded as seriously as the unions are funded.
He is showing his ignorance of the constitution that he claims to know so well....the lies just keep on coming.....
coming from a guy who admitted he did not read the bill. “It would take hours and a couple of lawyers to do that” What a dumb a$$. Clueless.
and un-indicted co conspirator.......
“promote general wellfare”
The declaration spells out what the founders were about, and the constitution soells out how to go about it. Right?
And that's just before the "if you don't win, deem that you have" clause
.
What a sick joke.
These Communist are good at making it up as they go along.
“This coming from the husband of a recently convicted felon.”
Yes...and who refused to spend any of his stolen resources to defend his wife, preferring that TAXPAYERS be charged for her defense via a court appointed attorney!!! Not MUCH of a thug, is he??!!
Does anyone else find it amazing that it’s taken over 220 years for Congress to realize that the “good and welfare clause” of the Constitution gives Congress the power to mandate that their subjects purchase a product or service?
Wikipedia actually has a pretty good writeup that clearly states that Conyers is dead wrong.

Promote does now equal “mandate”...
I’m guessing he means “promote the general welfare” clause in the preamble to the Constitution.
I don’t support a Constitutional Convention... why mess with perfection? We need someone, ANYONE, in public office to stand up for the existing law!
