A farewell ceremony has been held in Zamość, eastern Poland, for the seventh rotation of Polands military contingent in Afghanistan.
Chief of General Staff General Franciszek Gągor stressed in his address that the Polish contribution to the process of stabilization in Afghanistan is a major boost for Polands position and image on the international scene.
He added that the experience gained in the mission has tangibly accelerated the modernization of the Polish armed forces.
Poland has around 2, 200 soldiers serving in NATOs International Security Assistance Force at the moment. Next month it is to be expanded by 400 troops, with another 400 soldiers on a stand-by in Poland, ready to be dispatched to Afghanistan at a short notice.
The Polish contingent is in control of Ghazni province. Later this year, about 1000 American soldiers are to come under the Polish command.
