Per MSNBC, Bart Stupak has agreed to language in an executive order that would satisfy his block. He had called a press conference at 12:30, but has now canceled it. The seven Democrats left in his block will vote yes.
Details of what the order will contain are not known. Yesterday the Washington Post said that it is likely at the very least to restate Obamas commitment to upholding the Hyde Amendment.
Right now, the Hyde Amendment has to be renewed each year in the Appropriations bill. Having a Democratic President state it in the form of an Executive Order would be quite a coup for anti-abortion activists.
But Stupak has been after more than just Hyde. The health care bill contains $10 billion for Bernie Sanders community clinics, which would begin immediately rather than waiting until 2014. Planned Parenthood had pledged their support for the bill with the knowledge that much of that money would be going to their clinics, but would not be used for abortion services. However Stupak has pursuing the agenda of Americans United for Life, who want a commitment that no money go toward Planned Parenthood clinics regardless of what it is used for.
Its possible that the Stupak block were just looking for a graceful way out, an excuse to drop their fight and vote for the bill without looking to the anti-abortion community that they just gave in to political pressure. But until the language of the executive order is released publicly, nobody will know.
Rep. Diana DeGette agreed to support the executive order yesterday on behalf of the pro-choice caucus. DeGette has still not released the 41 names of those who signed her letter saying they would not vote for a conference report that contains language that restricts womens right to choose any further than current law, even though the language in the Senate bill most certainly does that.
Imagine what today would look like if progressives in the House had held their ground like the unions or the anti-abortion Democrats. As Armando notes, It actually stands as a testament to the ineptitude of progressives. Fighting for a very popular initiative, they still could not muster a bargaining strategy that could work.
Join us at 2pm today when debate iof the bill will begin in the House. It will proceed for 2 hours and then be stopped for the vote. After the House votes on the Senate bill, there will immediately be a vote on the reconciliation fix. Well be live blogging.
Also, it was reasonable to expect to hold off tyrants with mere rifles and cannons at that time. Bunker busters anybody?
Democrats ALWAYS sell out because they have no true morals. They will be slaughtered big time in November and they all know it. But I guess they they’d rather get voted out having passed healthcare than not passing anything.
All this drama has been democrats pretending to be truly undecided when they were going to vote for it all along. They were just trying to look “conflicted and serious”. And they were just waiting for the right deal. Also by delaying their decision publicly, they hoped to avoid massive protests by their own local constituents.
This is a done deal. Lets see how it plays out in the senate, the courts, and the elections over the next few years.
It’s the end of the democratic party, but a sad day for our country. Very sad.
May your chains rest lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were ever our countryman...
It can't.
Never forget.
Democrats are the enemy of freedom.
What would it take to move the Rats to impeach?
It just gives Stupak an excuse to cover his butt. If Obama never issues the order he can feign outrage at Obama and the democrat party and get more anti-dem votes. In the meantime he epitomizes the term “Sell out”.
Our legislature is (by law) out of session until next year, although there is an effort underway to get our governor to call a special session.
The Donks have written their opus, but oh what a stink.
In the end, Congress is not going to solve this: we and our state legislatures are. But it is going to get ugly.
Bullshit. Go lay down and die by yourself if you want.
The rest of us have a battle ahead of us.
I beg to differ. One can always trust the Dems to vote for Marxist projects. That is their entire mantra. They really never really repudiate that view. On the other hand since the demise of Ron Reagan, republican politicians merely espouse conservative ideals but immediately repudiate them when in office. Until there is a thorough house cleaning among republican politicians that party can no longer have my trust.
Nothing needs to be passed, and the American anger is enough that they might actually LIKE to see the federal government shut down.
Well, I believed that when I Heard about Stupak voting yes, now that I know he is voting NO, maybe we still have hope
Stupak will be held accountable.
Stroke of a pen and it is repealed ! Zero will renege on the E.O on abortion.
And in the meantime, our own drum beat must keep up to make Obama a pariah, to the point that even Rats would be willing to convict him upon impeachment.
True, but they aren’t going to say they’re marxists. They feint to the right when people are paying attention.
