Nope—to be a presidential candidate or president, you’ve gotta be conversant on dozens and dozens of tricky international situations.
Your plant manager knew how to talk budgets and trends in his part of the industry and competitive situations.

Nope—to be a presidential candidate or president, you’ve gotta be conversant on dozens and dozens of tricky international situations Current events would indicate that's not necessary.

Absolutely, otherwise you become a mere puppet to your advisors. The President needs to have enough knowledge of the field so that he can evaluate the advice given by his expert advisors.

No American president since Nixon has had any grasp of the nuances of foreign affairs, but two have had excellent advisors: Reagan, and Bush.

No offense, but you’re 100% wrong.
You don’t have to be conversant, you have to appear to be conversant. The first kind takes place in the real world, the second in the media (and it’s what is ruining our country).
What makes Palin more qualified than most politicians who have set foot in Washington during the past two centuries is the fact that she has not stopped living in the real world.
