~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico

Holloman Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located six miles southwest of the central business district of Alamogordo, a city in Otero County, New Mexico, United States. The base was named in honor of Col. George V. Holloman, a pioneer in guided missile research. It is the home of the 49th Fighter Wing (49 FW) of the Air Combat Command (ACC).

Air Combat Command is the primary force provider of combat airpower to America's warfighting commands. To support global implementation of national security strategy, ACC operates fighter, bomber, reconnaissance, battle-management and electronic-combat aircraft. It also provides command, control, communications and intelligence systems, and conducts global information operations.

On June 10, 1942, an event occurred that permanently changed the face of the Tularosa Basin -- Alamogordo Army Air Field was established at a site six miles west of Alamogordo, New Mexico. Initial plans called for the base to serve as the center for the British Overseas Training program; the British hoped to be able to train their aircrews over the open New Mexico skies.

However, everything changed when the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the Hawaiian Islands on December 7, 1941. The British decided to no longer pursue its overseas training program, and the United States military saw the location as an opportunity to train its own growing military. Construction began at the airfield on February 6, 1942 and forces began to move in on May 14, 1942.

The 49th Fighter Wing -- host wing at Holloman Air Force Base -- supports national security objectives with mission-ready F-22A Raptors, Air Transportable Medical Clinic and BEAR Base assets.

The Wing deploys combat-ready and mission-support forces supporting Air Expeditionary Force operations, Global War on Terrorism and peacetime contingencies; trains pilots in the F-22A and the T-38A aircraft; and provides support to over 18,000 personnel to include German Air Force Tornado operations. The wing has a proud history of service in World War II, Korea, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia and NATO-led Operation Allied Force.

Along with the 49th FW, the 46th Test Group , part of the 46th Test Wing from Eglin Air Force Base, Florida is based at Holloman. The 46th TG is an Air Force Materiel Command unit responsible for operational testing and evaluation of new equipment and systems proposed for use by these forces. Current initiatives include advanced self-protection systems for combat aircraft, aircrew life support systems, aerial reconnaissance improvements, new armament and weapons delivery systems, and improved maintenance equipment and logistics support.

Good evening, Mooch....the Ides are trying. I couldn’t believe how much melting went on today. It really does look like breakup, but I can’t believe it could be this early.

Piper is in freefall! She loves to cross the monkey bars, something she's only been doing for about 2 months now. Today, she decided to add a new move to her routine - dropping from the rings to the ground! Good thing the 'ground' is a soft rubberized pad.

Thank you - fingers crossed and shutter snapped - who knew?

I asked her if she wants to be a gymnast, because she did a lot of things a gymnast would do - rings, dismounts, etc. She pulled herself up onto a bar and swung from it, then dropped and gave me a ‘Ta-Da’! moment. That’s the next pic.

This little one isn’t so little any more, she’s really growing up.

Oops, forgot the rest of the story. She said no, she doesn’t want to be a gymnast. She didn’t give a reason, she was just certain that a gymnastic future isn’t hers.

The pic of the boneyard is really neat. Later tonight I’m going for a ride in an A-10.

Learning her own mind, and able to express it. At the ripe old age of 6 does she “know” what she wants to be when she grows up. (At least for the next week or two....LOL!)

Hello Kathy and Canteeners. It was a nice day here today in central California (72 degrees). Tomorrow is forecast to be 77 and partly cloudy. Oh, and I biked 20 miles today (a new personal best!)

My wonderful DH comes home in just 16 days! (smile)

Ta-Da!!! After a short swinging routine on the short parallel bar, Ms. Piper does a back-swing dismount and sticks her landing, then raises an arm to acknowledge her audience. Of one!

Have you had your first tea party yet? Is she learning to skate? Ride a bike?

I was thinking of these....I'm feeling very old right now. They are "vintage".

These are the in thing.......*sigh*

I don’t know, she may have some skates at Mommy’s house.
I’ve never seen her on them.
She rides a bike and a scooter.
As for tea parties, we’ve been doing those for 2-3 years now!!

Hope you don’t get dizzy easy. Could turn into Alfred Hitchcocks movie “Vertigo” if you watch it in a darkened room.
