Gibbs: By next Sunday, healthcare reform will be 'law of the land' By Walter Alarkon - 03/14/10 09:59 AM ET

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the healthcare bill will pass by next weekend.

"We'll have the votes when the House votes, I think, within the next week," Gibbs said on "Fox News Sunday."

Gibbs added that those on next week's Sunday talk shows "will be talking about healthcare not as a presidential proposal but I think as the law of the land."

President Barack Obama will look to campaign on the new healthcare law in midterm elections, Gibbs said.

"We believe healthcare reform is going to pass, and once it passes we're happy to have the 2010 elections be about the achievement of healthcare reform," Gibbs said.

But Republicans on Fox said there's no guarantee the bill passes and that Democrats will benefit from it.

"If they pass this thing, I think they lose the House of Representatives this fall," said former Bush White House adviser Karl Rove.

If Democrats do pass it, "then the American people will be the losers," said House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.).

"This is a trillion-dollar-bill attempting to overhaul healthcare for every single American," Cantor added.

The bill in its first 10 years will cost nearly $900 billion.

Cantor also criticized Democrats for talking about "bending the rules" by holding a single House vote that allows passage of both the bill passed by the Senate and a package of fixes. That move, under consideration by House Democratic leaders, would keep House members from voting on unpopular parts of the Senate bill, namely special deals that were included to win over recalcitrant senators.

"There should be in the minds of most Americans a direct vote on the Senate bill," Cantor said.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (Md.), a member of House Democratic leadership, dismissed suggestions the House will pass the Senate bill without a vote, but he left open the possibility of packaging the fixes with the underlying bill.

"We're going to have an up or down vote," he said.

Peaceful secession.....if liberty has any meaning at all. Yes, I know all about the legal consequences ad infinitum of such a move, but at what point does the law/laws become an ass in terms of the God-given rights of freedom and liberty? At what point do free peoples act as the takers of society continue to set policies that make slaves of everyone? And no, I don’t believe changing governing parties is going to make much of a difference.....IMHO

That is an excellent point!! I never thought of that issue but it is quite true — he did was agitate a 5-4 Majority of the now sitting Justices. Who knows, he may have even pissed off the likes of Sotomayor, et al.

Funny but I am not haunted, I know what I am going to do and that is to refuse government health care. My only concern at this point is what to expect as far as consequences for my actions so I may prepare appropriately. Hopefully someone somewhere has compiled a list of penalties with time frames.

As far as I am concerned dumb ass and his goons can BRING IT!

You are right. He is probably not bluffing and to pretend that he is will just mean we’ll let our guard down.

There have been times in my life when I really enjoyed "being right".....this is most emphatically not one of them.

Thanks...I held back LOL. In all seriousness these people have pissed me off. I am getting back in touch with the teenage girl I used to be, the one whose favorite thing to say was “you’re not the boss of me”. Hubby knows we need to build a get wife out of jail fund. I am almost ready to quit my job and protest full time. He is overseas so I definitely have too much time on my hands to get riled up:-)

I doubt if the Republicans can repeal this thing when they take over next January unless they have a super majority in the House and Senate that can override a veto, but what they can do, I think, is to vote not to fund it. They can vote to repeal the taxes needed to fund it and vote not to fund it again.

Let the DemonRATS own it then. If it passes, in thirty years kiddies will be asking, “Granpa, who were the DemonRATS?”

once it passes we're happy to have the 2010 elections be about the achievement of healthcare reform," Gibbs said.

Both Gibbs and his asshole boss always say this, "we'd be glad to have this debate, this conversation, this election," but then you never hear of it again. I agree with Rush, if this monstrosity actually passes, you will not hear the words "healthcare reform" uttered by any democrat or their media pimps again.

The only ray of hope, if this abomination occurs, is what the State of Virginia is doing, rejection of the stupid bill. Calling our Governors and State legislators to do the same would cause some excitement and might bring about our much needed Washington clean out! How many States are considering this is the real question if it passes.

This attmept to pass the bill is nothing less than an attempted coup. If Americans accept this behavior, then I will have lost my faith in the average American.

Death to tyranny.

I absolutely agree with your assessment, Star Traveler. We would not have to be dealing with Obama at all(he would still be smoking dope and Community Organizing his way through Chicago)if it were not for Levin’s vengeful “drones” who went brain dead in the last election, and thought they weren’t going to have to make car payments anymore if they put The One in office.
And these “drones” are our family members, our neighbors, not my friends but maybe yours. We have them to thank: the uninformed, American Idol electorate. Unfortunately, their votes count the same as ours...

There is going to be a lot of celebration and cheering from the commie left once this crap is finally rammed down our throats. At that time, I think it will be very important for us to start making even more noise than we are now. I know I’ll be contacting my Rep. (AGAIN!) to let her know she’s toast in November. I think she already knows that because she was an Obamanoid rubber stamp that rode his coattails to a win. Once ObamaCare is in the books, the ‘RATS won’t care whether she gets reelected or not.

We can move to Idaho, Utah, Arizona or VA for now...and more states to follow. All have legislation pending to block mandated federal healthcae via the Tenth Amendment:

So, there’s hope! :)

....a few months until the courts throw this out....

Yeah, like Roe vs Wade?

The difference is that Roe v Wade was a court decision that set precedence. This would be an act of Congress that can be overturned by the courts, just like they did the flag burning legislation passed several years ago.

Yeah, I agree with you. My point was it will take more than a few months to repeal this through the courts.
