I believe that people are responding to the thread topic.

“Whenever the NY Times places a “dagger” symbol next to a book, it signifies that “some bookstores report[ed] receiving bulk orders” for the book.

The NY Times placed not just one, but two, daggers next to Romney’s book. You can draw your own conclusion as to who it was that purchased Governor Romney’s book in bulk.

By contrast, the NY Times failed to place the “dagger” symbol next to Governor Palin’s book in any of the weeks she held the top position on the NY Times best-seller list among non-fiction hardcover books. Despite the left’s unsubstantiated theories, bookstores did not report to the NY Times that they received bulk orders for Going Rogue.”

The difference is that most people here do not have an irrational screeching hatred of Sarah Palin.

Listening to John Batchelor on WABC.
He and his guest was just speaking of the 2 daggers -
bulk orders for Mitt’s book vs the early non bulk for Sarah.

I figured as much yesterday when they said he would be #1 this weekend on the NYT. His ego would not allow him to sell fewer than Palin... of course JMHO.

No, it is a way to funnel money to the next presidential candidate that he can repay when he gets elected in the form of political favors...for those not quite as weasely in their thinking as our elected leaders.

Like clock work, politicians release memoirs about their incredibly boring lives up until that point right before they kick off their campaigns. For some reason, regardless of the politician, they keep knocking them out of the park. As a group, they are the most successful writers to ever grace the planet.

Buying direct from the publisher does not affect placement on bestseller lists. It costs less to buy from the publisher than it does to buy from a retailer who reports their sales to the NYT, so anyone who buys a large quantity from a retailer is spending money solely to buy placement on the list.

Yes, it is quite a common practice, however as you also stated the books are not “purchased” from a book store but shipped directly from the publisher and are not included in retail sales counts.

This the opposite of that practice, and it beatifically inflates the numbers.

It's astounding to behold, it really is.

What is astounding is that some people just don't know how to do math. $63K represents only a few thousand copies, which does not place a book anywhere near the best seller list. And also, the reason Palin's copies didn't register the dagger is that she purchased them directly from the publisher rather than through a book store where they are counted as scanned sales.

In the case of Romney's book, someone is buying bulk from the book stores. If this was Romney this would have to be a deliberate attempt to increase the sales figures, because I am sure he would know that buying them directly from the publisher sans the royalty like Palin did would be much cheaper. Don't cha think?

Otherwise, someone is just trying to corner the market on resales of this hot item.

Mostly likely these are being purchased by Mormon organizations...would be interesting to see if any actual numbers are released in regards to the bulk purchases...print runs and sales are often treated in mysterious manners...magritte

One way or the other it means Mitt is artificially inflating the numbers.

I will try and act shocked.
