Evangelical leader takes on Beck for assailing social justice churches
CNN ^ | March 12, 2010 | John Blake

(CNN) -- An evangelical leader is calling for a boycott of Glenn Beck's television show and challenging the Fox News personality to a public debate after Beck vilified churches that preach economic and social justice.

The Rev. Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners, a network of progressive Christians, says Beck perverted Jesus' message when he urged Christians last week to leave churches that preach social and economic justice.

Wallis says Beck compared those churches to Communists and Nazis.

Wallis says at least 20,000 people have already responded to his call to boycott Beck. He says Beck is confusing his personal philosophy with the Bible.

"He wants us to leave our churches, but we should leave him," Wallis says of Beck. "When your political philosophy is to consistently favor the rich over the poor, you don't want to hear about economic justice."

Wallis says he wants to go on Beck's show to challenge the contention that churches shouldn't preach economic and social justice.

Social and economic justice is at the heart of Jesus' message, Wallis says.

"He's afraid of being challenged on his silly caricatures," Wallis says. "Glenn Beck talks a lot when he doesn't have someone to dialogue with. Is he willing to talk with someone who he doesn't agree with?"

Teach a man to fish...

vs.

Give a man a fish and feed him for a day.

While I know that verse is often used to talk about saving souls...it also demonstrates Jesus wasn’t into redistribution of wealth. He was talking about redistribution of knowledge.

Most Christians I know ARE for economic and social justice.

Economic justice means paying people fairly for the work they perform, letting people keep what they earn without envying them, donating to private charities to help those who cannot take care of themselves, etc.

Social justice means treating people equally, not showing favoritism to the poor or rich or treating people differently based on external appearance. etc.

Whatever this evangelical leader is preaching, it sure doesn’t sound like Christianity to me!

But preaching that Government should relieve well-off, hard working people of a portion of their incomes so that Government can then decide to whom it should be given has nothing to do with Christianity and everything to do with Marxism.

Exactly. Helping the poor is an expression of our obedience to the Saviour, not to the government, and means nothing in and of itself. And the only Commission Jesus gave everybody was the Great Commission, because eternal salvation trumps material relief, if we must prioritise.

Don't be naive. Jesus never demanded that his followers confiscate the food, clothing, money, and rights of others, at sword point, for the sake of giving it to indiscriminate collections of unbelievers.

Be clear. "Social justice" churches are opposed in principle to private charity. They consider it the duty of government, and do not encourage private charity, considering it a temporary effort pending the government's shouldering its full responsibility.

And that's the truth that the media will never tell you--there is nothing "just" about "social justice."

It’s not charity if the government forces you to jail, when was taxation charity? conpelling/forcing to pay entitlement taxes people sounds like Satan's plan not Jesus because if you don't chose to give it it's not charity it's robbery.

“The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me.”

Wallis’/social justice version: “The poor are exploited. Let us picket Rome and write grievances to Herod to appeal for more welfare as well as universal health care from Rome. I have not come here as an offering for salvation, but to blame the rich. Yes, a rich man will lend me a tomb for around 3 days, but remember, capitalism is of the devil” Remember also, all faiths are equal, what I am doing here is just an alternative way, pilfer the rich, let the elites run the show."

“Social justice” is not the business of the churches.

No offense, but that statement doesn't make sense. Without social justice there is no freedom of religion.

kittykat77: “I’m not being snarkastic. I really want to know. If Jesus was not preaching this, then what was he preaching?”

Jesus wasn’t here to fix this world. He was here to fix sinful people. Getting spiritually right with God is paramount.

Once someone is spiritually right with God, they will behave in ways that result in true social and economic justice. There’s simply no biblical evidence that Christ wanted his followers to be Marxists.

So we don't have freedom of religion unless we have Marxist wealth redistribution under the guise of religion? THAT makes no sense.

Wallis is a dopey socialist that gets pumped up by the left wing statist media. He’s an embassassment. I would bet you that if Beck did agree to a debate then Wallis would suddenly find some reason why he couldn’t make it. The left likes to promote these people who are basically socialist marxists who have a “christian” cover.

“But what did He preach?”

The Law/good news, and then by His actions, full filled the Law. Pretty simple, but there are earthly rackets to be had.
