Evangelical leader takes on Beck for assailing social justice churches
CNN ^ | March 12, 2010 | John Blake

(CNN) -- An evangelical leader is calling for a boycott of Glenn Beck's television show and challenging the Fox News personality to a public debate after Beck vilified churches that preach economic and social justice.

The Rev. Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners, a network of progressive Christians, says Beck perverted Jesus' message when he urged Christians last week to leave churches that preach social and economic justice.

Wallis says Beck compared those churches to Communists and Nazis.

Wallis says at least 20,000 people have already responded to his call to boycott Beck. He says Beck is confusing his personal philosophy with the Bible.

"He wants us to leave our churches, but we should leave him," Wallis says of Beck. "When your political philosophy is to consistently favor the rich over the poor, you don't want to hear about economic justice."

Wallis says he wants to go on Beck's show to challenge the contention that churches shouldn't preach economic and social justice.

Social and economic justice is at the heart of Jesus' message, Wallis says.

"He's afraid of being challenged on his silly caricatures," Wallis says. "Glenn Beck talks a lot when he doesn't have someone to dialogue with. Is he willing to talk with someone who he doesn't agree with?"

The article is EXTREMELY vague about what this guy is teaching. The Bible does demand justice and caring for the poor. But I suspect this guy is preaching something different.

Sojourners Diversity Statement

In accordance with Sojourners’ mission to articulate the biblical call to social justice:

* We affirm the biblical truth of every human being’s inherent dignity and worth, as all people are created in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27)

* We affirm that in the Body of Christ there is no distinction or hierarchy according to racial, ethnic, gender, or social identity and economic status. (Galatians 3:28)

* We seek not to deny or erase the uniqueness manifest in God’s creation, but celebrate this diversity as essential to the unity and strength of Christ’s Body. (1 Corinthians 12:12-31)

* We believe that unity in diversity is not only desirable, but essential to fulfilling God’s ultimate desire for God’s people, as expressed in scripture (Acts 2, Revelation 7:9), and thus an essential element of seeking God’s will on earth as it is in heaven.

* We confess that both personal prejudice and systemic oppression are sin. We lament that we all have been both individually and corporately damaged by these sinful patterns, whether as perpetrators, victims, or both. (James 2:1-9; Isaiah 10:1-2)

* We humbly seek forgiveness, restoration, accountability, and healing through Christ, as we seek to be peacemakers answering God’s call to the ministry of reconciliation. (2 Corinthians 5:16-19)

Building upon these biblical foundations, we commit ourselves to:

* Confront and dismantle discriminatory behavior wherever it may be manifest—whether individually or organizationally—by creating and maintaining policies and practices that foster right relationships among our staff.

* Intentionally seek partners, participants, and contributors to our programs, events, and publications that mirror the diversity of our churches and society, with special efforts to welcome those who are underrepresented.

* Employ, retain, and promote a diverse staff, leadership, and board of directors that mirror the diversity of our churches and society. Sojourners is an Equal Opportunity employer, committed to affirmative action in regard to women and minorities.

* Educate our staff by providing ongoing training and orientation that teaches the value of diversity and provides practical skills in building intercultural competency and gender equality, thereby strengthening our ability to relate meaningfully across differences of gender, race, and ethnicity.

* Empower a Diversity Task Force made up of a diverse array of Sojourners staff members to hold Sojourners accountable to its values and promote initiatives related to diversity.

* Publicly advocate for civil rights and legal non-discrimination to protect the safety and dignity of all people.

* Continually seek personal, organizational, and social transformation, guided by scripture, humbly listening to those marginalized by society’s past and present patterns of discrimination.

Social and economic justice is at the heart of Jesus' message, Wallis says.

Can someone explain to me how social and economic justice is not at the heart of Jesus' message?

I'm not being snarkastic. I really want to know. If Jesus was not preaching this, then what was he preaching?

Beck better watch out - he’s going to lose 20, maybe 30, viewers.

Wallis is an ecumenical RAT trying to co-opt evangelicalism. Evangelicalism . . . as in the movement OUT of the heresy from the mainline denominations over the last 40-50 years.

It’s clear that socialists are infiltrating every large organization they can, be it government or religion, and are succeeding. I hope enough people open their eyes and use their free will to counter them.

Yep, that's what he is alright. Hosea:4-6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

This is what happens when people look to a man to tell them who God is. Instead of knowing God through a personal relationship, studying the word and getting to know God for themselves.

Wallis' idea of Social Justice is milking his dirt-poor parrishioners like cows for money that they don't have so he can tell them how evil the middle class is.

Beck is right about this clown. Preach that crap if you must, but don't pretend that Jesus has anything to do with it.

Biblically, Jesus asks that people who can afford to should, of their own volition, give generously to aid those less fortunate. By and large, this is how America works at her best. But preaching that Government should relieve well-off, hard working people of a portion of their incomes so that Government can then decide to whom it should be given has nothing to do with Christianity and everything to do with Marxism.

"Mother, call the police, I'm going to get my gun..."

Just laying the groundwork for co-opting Christianity In Name Only into the coming one-world church, just as the political left—and some on the “right”, truth be told—is laying the groundwork for one-world government, ie, the “globalists”. Prophecy coming to pass before our very eyes.

The only way there eyes will be open is if they are searching for the truth. They have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Or if there is someone out there praying for their souls.
