Amnesty International may be best known to American audiences for bringing to light horror stories overseas such as the disappearance of political activists in Argentina or the abysmal conditions inside South African prisons under apartheid. But in a new report on pregnancy and childbirth care in the U.S., Amnesty details the maternal health care crisis in this country as part of a systemic violation of women's rights.
The report, titled "Deadly Delivery," notes that the likelihood of a woman dying in childbirth in the U.S. is five times greater than in Greece, four times greater than in Germany, and three times greater than in Spain. Every day in the U.S., more than two women die of pregnancy-related causes, with the maternal mortality ratio doubling from 6.6 deaths per 100,000 births in 1987 to 13.3 deaths per 100,000 births in 2006. (And as shocking as these figures are, Amnesty notes that the actual number of maternal deaths in the U.S. may be a lot higher since there are no federal requirements to report these outcomes and since data collection at the state and local levels needs to be improved.) "In the U.S., we spend more than any country on health care, yet American women are at greater risk of dying from pregnancy-related causes than in 40 other countries," says Nan Strauss, the report's co-author, who spent two years investigating the issue of maternal mortality worldwide. "We thought that was scandalous." (See the most common hospital mishaps.)

dumbest thing for a long time
Is there even a shred of evidence of this being true? I doubt it.
Thats probably true but this is also bogus for other reasons.
That's not what the article is talking about. According to the article blacks have a 400% higher mortality rate. On average they're having their babies younger, not older. In the inner cities they also have a 50% rate of herpes, chlamydia and other STDs.
Taking the same data Amnesty wants to blame the health care system and not the lack of personal responsibility. Freeper guys want to blame white women who have their first after the age of 40.
How is this possible? I with the both of you on this one.
OK AI, what number of pregnant woman dying is not “too many.”
It really makes you appreciate what we’ve got here in the US, doesn’t it? (for now...)
As soon as we left the hospital, we joked about how going there was probably a net loss, health-wise.
Oh! I have another gripe!
After Greece, we were set to go see the pyramids in Giza, but missed our flight to Cairo b/c the public transportation workers were on strike. No buses, no taxis. And the airport was 20 miles away.
I’ve told all my friends about our ordeal, just so they know what to expect, should our current “leadership” get their way on things.
(God I hope not!)
We have four boys and had one girl. Our daughter died during childbirth and my wife dang near died.
Why? Because we have standard insurance. We went to the doctor covered by our plan who did everything covered by our plan and no one caught a fairly common blood clotting condition my wife has because our insurance doesn’t cover the test. My wife had complained of some things that just didn’t seem right, but the doctor told us not to worry about it.
After my daughter’s funeral (my wife went full term, went into labor and our daughter died just before being born), we decided to find out what was going on. We went to a specialist and PAID FOR IT OURSELVES.
Expensive? Absolutely not. She described what was going on and the doctor said, “Oh, you need this test.” Sure enough, simple as that, she found out not only what the problem was but that it was easily treated - and needed to be even when she’s not pregnant.
It was a lot less expensive than spending weeks fighting our insurance company (which we eventually dropped), trying to find what doctors they covered (this doctor will not file insurance claims and tells his patients to take care of it themselves) and trying to force the doctor to order a test the insurance company didn’t want to pay for.
We have had 3 healthy boys since, each at a cost less than a funeral. I don’t make a six figure salary, I just take care of my family the best I can. I have a high-cost deductible insurance plan that will keep me from going bankrupt in case of an emergency. Otherwise, I pay for my care, and I always get what I pay for.
If the “author” of this article or amnesty international want to know how to fix the problems, tell them to LET THE MARKET WORK.
Remove illegal immigrants from the data and we’re just fine. Same for the other bogus Left-wing hit pieces against the USA that NEVER mention the actual root cause. May these charlatans all burn in hell.
(And as shocking as these figures are, Amnesty notes that the actual number of maternal deaths in the U.S. may be a lot higher since there are no federal requirements to report these outcomes
And yet they have these numbers but they can’t be sure because there is no reporting. So the numbers are probably higher. That is all you need to read all those calling BS.
“UNITED KINGDOM, August 20, 2007 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Since Amnesty International officially reaffirmed its pro-abortion policy last weekend, an English bishop has withdrawn his support, thereby signaling that Catholics should begin a boycott of the organization.”
Enough said!
I agree. I just don’t know how they skewed the data yet.
Did you know that the stats of longevity which show the US behind many socialist countries are the product of non-uniform standards?
For instance, the US counts the death of live birth babies; Europe does not.
Of course I didn’t hear them mention how many babies are dying from their mothers killing them.
why is this in breaking news?
The age of 16 or 17 is fine, but many of these girls have their first baby at 13 or 14, which is a little early (and is one of the causes of death in Third World Countries, too).

Code Red - House Target List on Health Care
The National Republican Congressional Committee has published a target list on health care. In addition to continuing to contact the five Tennessee Democrat Congressmen, you can go http://www.votervoice.net/link/clickthrough/ext/94697.aspx to contact some of these targets. Much of the talk following Obamas announcement has focused on how to defeat this second bill through reconciliation, but that is misleading because the first step to defeating Obamacare is not by concentrating on defeating the fixer bill but by defeating the Senate bill in the House when it goes to the floor for an up-or-down vote on Thursday, March 18th.

“Where is NOW, Amnesty International or the drunk US Congress? “
They’re busy collecting their ‘mordida’ from Mexico.
So what is it... 2.2 die a day giving birth?
Liberals are insane
It has been reported that more than 40% of all women will end a pregnancy by abortion at some time in their reproductive lives. (If you're I know..." keep in mind that in some other, high-abortion communities, it could be closer to 100%).
Each and every abortion quietly and insidiously increases the incidence of complications (such as, especially, prematurity) in subsequent pregnancies.
Our horrendous abortion rate translates, in part, into a horrendous later-complication rate, some of which results in the loss of subsequent babies' lives, and some (a smaller percentage) in the loss of mothers' lives.
The total cumulative damage is incalculable.
