SANTIAGO, Chile A strong earthquake shook Chile Thursday, shortly before Sebastian Pinera was to be sworn in as president. The aftershock reached a 7.2-magnitude according to the United States Geological Survey.

OED: Random = "Having no definite aim or purpose; not sent or guided in a particular direction; made, done, occurring, etc., without method or conscious choice; haphazard."
I contend that God ordains whatsoever comes to pass with absolute mathematical precision. There are no accidents. There is no dice rolling. "Randomness" is a meaningless concept to God. For us, it is only a measure of our uncertainty.
Acts 17:28
For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.
Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Isaiah 55:9
For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
John 9 1-3 maybe
It is difficult for something to be “random” when one has absolute knowledge... :-) ...
It only appears random to those who don’t have that kind of knowledge (and we never will, of course).
But, it even goes further than absolute “knowledge” — you see... It even goes into the area of “actively intervening” to the point where things are done which wouldn’t be done, if left on their own (i.e., left to their own natural processes, even if one does have absolute knowledge... :-) ...).
In other words, God not only has absolute knowledge, He has absolute power, and thus can change what His “knowledge” indicates will happen (if left on its own and to natural processes...). :-)
I live in southwest Missouri (opposite side of the state from the New Madrid Fault) and I wonder if that fault will go one day.
That was the biggest earthquake in the "lower 48" in the existence of the United States.
Whole lotta shaking going on!
Been meaning to ask you . . . finally got to the right page . . . which of those chapters in which book is the New Madrid quake scenario?
Thx in advance.
Blessings,
The news coverage stating “Chile Devastated by Earthquake” would be as accurate as “USA Devastated by Hurricane Katrina!”
Santiago was only affected by shortages of certain products as people stocked up on stuff they didn’t need just like people do in the US before a hurricane hits.
Make no mistake, there is devastation in the south, but devastation equal to the devastation caused by Hurricane Hugo in 89 in the states, for example.
I just had a Starbucks for lunch after the 7.2 here in Santiago, so don’t get so caught up in the sensationalist media.
All that said, they are very nerve wracking, and if you want to see a video that gives a good impression of what the 8.8 was like on a high floor of an apartment building, this one brought back bad memories for me: http://www.3tv.cl/index.php?m=video&v=10751
All things considered . . .
isn’t
“thread hijacking”

whatever string of posts is of no interest or is annoying to the person using the label?
sidebars abound on FR and always have. Folks can ignore them or enjoy them or rant at them. The options are not infinite.
I can’t read that chart. For how long after the quake did the plates continue moving? We probably felt it for 10-20 seconds.
Lifting up suffering to the Lord is a blessing.
I am going to assume their are many who are in Chili doing just that lifting up their suffering to God.
May he bless them with grace and mercy for doing so.
Our Father along with all the Angels and Saints recieve all those lifting up prayers in times of suffering.....as your son did on the cross for all of us.
That is my view stuartcr.
Our God is merciful loving God not some tyrant with a whip.
How do you not know that the earthquake was not a show of support for the faithful of Chili?
Ya dont nor do I.
In Any time of Suffering lift it up to God as a gift...as his son did for you.
Wind blows/earthquakes/snowstorms these things and more happen to a place called Earth where humans live.
Its how you deal with it that matters.
“How in the world can the people there exist with these continual quakes and the damage?”
For me, it’s emotional more than anything. With hurricanes, you can anticipate them, and make preparations...you’re also aware of what is happening. With the earthquakes here, I was woken up at 3am by the 8.8, felt various others since, and this recent quake hit while I was speaking with a client on the phone...it’s an invisible force that you can’t anticipate.
They will through all the Prayer intentions being lifted up.
Its the Marxist/atheist population that will be in the dark.
Main article: New Madrid Seismic Zone
The epicenters of over 4,000 earthquakes can be identified from seismic measurements taken since 1974. It can be seen that the earthquakes originate from the seismic activity of the Reelfoot Rift. The zone which is strongly colored in red on the map is called the New Madrid Seismic Zone.
4000 earthquake reports since 1974
Recent earthquakes
The zone remains active today. In recent decades minor earthquakes have continued. New forecasts estimate a 7 to 10 percent chance, in the next 50 years, of a repeat of a major earthquake like those that occurred in 1811-1812, which likely had magnitudes of between 7.5 and 8.0. There is a 25 to 40 percent chance, in a 50-year time span, of a magnitude 6.0 or greater earthquake. Understanding of this earthquake zone is growing slowly in comparison to awareness of the San Andreas fault.
Earthquake preparedness
The situation is more precarious than it was in 1811. The area is more densely populated, and many buildings have no earthquake resistant construction. Active research in the region continues, with a goal of defining the risk of future earthquakes. A few emergency funds for earthquake victims have been founded. Measures are also being ordered to mitigate any natural disaster resulting from an earthquake; thus in the construction of dams, bridges, and highways, earthquake safety is particularly being taken into account.
Congratulations on perhaps the dumbest post ever on FR.
I wish EWTN could change their Lenten proggramming and put in a program about the Catholic History of Chili.
They do a better job IMO than the history channel on history.
No hidden socialist/marxist agendas when coming from EWTN.
Quite the oppisite, not shy about calling a spade a spade.
The New Madrid Quake aftermath is described in the new book, Foreign Enemies And Traitors. The quake parts are also in the FEAT excerpts posted on my website.
The first and second earthquakes occurred in Arkansas (December 16, 1811 - two shocks - Mfa 7.2, MSn 8.5 and Mfa 7.0, MSn 8.0) and the third and fourth in Missouri (January 23, 1812, Mfa 7.1, MSn 8.4; and February 7, 1812, Mfa 7.4, MSn 8.8). Otto Nuttli, however, has postulated another strong earthquake in Arkansas on December 16 at 18:00 UTC (MSn 8.0). This would make a total of five earthquakes of magnitude MSn 8.0 or higher occurring in the period December 16, 1811 through February 7, 1812.

Congratulations on perhaps the dumbest post ever on FR.
The good thing about some kinds of "dumb posts" -- is that it can generate some good answers... and in this case (and if I do say so myself... LOL...) some good answers about God and who He is and what God does in this world...
So, have you been granted the ability to make spiritual discernments?
Yes, I understand your repetition. So, is it possible for a human to do something that God does NOT know will happen? Yes or no?
