A national ID card using biometric data such as fingerprints is at the center of an immigration reform bill being hammered out in the U.S. Senate a measure that once again probably will pit advocates of homeland security and tough immigration enforcement against civil libertarians, employers and immigrant rights groups.
The new effort by Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Lindsey Graham, R- S.C., will revive the Real ID debate that has festered for years with little effect on illegal immigration. Under their plan, a universally required card would be encoded with all sorts of information regarding the holder, as well as contain a unique biometric signature created from either fingerprints or the vein patterns on the tops of the hands.
Bottom line: Employers will not be able to hire applicants who do not present a valid ID.
Schumer and Graham are slated to meet soon with President Barack Obama to brief him on their work. An administration official said the White House has no position on the biometric card, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

Liar liar is right. Every day, on every subject.
I guess you've never bought a car, a house, applied for a job, opened a bank account etc...the list is long.
I think the health care reform bill is one of the two most destructive pieces of legislation that could be imposed on our country, the other being Schumer’s yet-to-be-introduced amnesty legislation, which he is struggling to find co-sponsors for and which very likely WILL include a national ID of some sort. It is highly ironic that the inclusion of such a provision will be his bill’s poison pill and kiss of death. And it goes to show how little he understands about his own country. I also think the best way to fight the passage of these bill is with facts, not suppositions.
You’re right. Just looked at my son’s card. Wonder when that changed.
No one uses the “card” as a means of identification.
after we kill Obamacare, running Lindsay Grahmnesty out of the GOP has to become a top priority
I received my SS card in 1974, it's not on mine either,
B.S. This card is for control and they hope to sell it to us by attaching it to the illegal immigration issue.
You can't get a job without showing it, I just opened a new bank account and had to show it.
Build and man the g*ddam wall, punish the employers of illegals and take away the bennies illegals are getting! (Build the wall at the easiest and most used crossing places for a start. Let the desert drastically discourage crossing elsewhere.)
But no - as usual - never let a crisis go to waste when you can use national ID cards to control productive, non law breaking citizens instead of those breaking the law.
Yeah but that SS card really is a lousy form of ID. It tells the viewer the one thing you don’t want to give out
and does nothing to physically identify you.
how about that id card passport? it is plastic like a DL and consititutes proof of citizenship.
I might be for this if EVERYONE has to show incontrovertible evidence for citizenship. That would include birth certificate or citizenship status.
OK zero!
I was just making the point that you can’t do anything without it these days, it is a form of I.D., though not in the sense of a driver license.
We are headed down the path to total slavery and you think it is a good idea.
how about just IMPROVING THE SS CARD?
I agree. We just spread myths you know, we are fear mongers.
I am well aware of Armey and a few others who have claimed for themselves leadership positions in the Tea Party movement. They are not. They are just trying to exploit the movement for their own gain. Nobody but the MSM is looking to them for guidance and leadership.
True Tea Party members do not recognize any "leaders".You may need an occasional volunteer to do things like arrange the meeting or the bus charter, but the wisdom of the Tea Party movement is that it is a consensus of the average citizens that drives them, not the siren call of political hacks like Armey who are part of inside the Beltway kleptocrats who have gotten us to this position.
By the way, Palin has made no definitive statement of support for amnesty. She was reticent and equivocating when asked about it in the campaign, in deference to the fact that she was running on McCain's ticket and had to toe the line. Her comments before and since show no support for amnesty and open borders. Don't include her with the Armey types.
