Waterboarding For Dummies

Interrogators pumped detainees full of so much water that the CIA turned to a special saline solution to minimize the risk of death, the documents show. The agency used a gurney "specially designed" to tilt backwards at a perfect angle to maximize the water entering the prisoner's nose and mouth, intensifying the sense of choking – and to be lifted upright quickly in the event that a prisoner stopped breathing.

The documents also lay out, in chilling detail, exactly what should occur in each two-hour waterboarding "session." Interrogators were instructed to start pouring water right after a detainee exhaled, to ensure he inhaled water, not air, in his next breath. They could use their hands to "dam the runoff" and prevent water from spilling out of a detainee's mouth. They were allowed six separate 40-second "applications" of liquid in each two-hour session – and could dump water over a detainee's nose and mouth for a total of 12 minutes a day. Finally, to keep detainees alive even if they inhaled their own vomit during a session – a not-uncommon side effect of waterboarding – the prisoners were kept on a liquid diet. The agency recommended Ensure Plus.

... The CIA's waterboarding regimen was so excruciating, the memos show, that agency officials found themselves grappling with an unexpected development: detainees simply gave up and tried to let themselves drown. "In our limited experience, extensive sustained use of the waterboard can introduce new risks," the CIA's Office of Medical Services wrote in its 2003 memo. "Most seriously, for reasons of physical fatigue or psychological resignation, the subject may simply give up, allowing excessive filling of the airways and loss of consciousness."

Marine Corps boot camp is worse than this, by a long shot!

How so? I didn’t know simulated drowning, force feeding, and diapers were part of the standard hazing, but then I never had the honor of serving.

Well, it sounds pretty ugly, but then I remind myself of two things: these people do worse to their enemies, and they want to kill us all. And that’s what it boils down to, for me.

Did it get them the information they needed?

If yes, no further investigation is needed.

How many trainees gave up and chose death over finishing boot camp?

KSM broke from waterboarding and gave good information, including the details of the plot that was to be the Heathrow airport terrorist attack (thwarted).

Brutal? No doubt.

Deserved, to be sure. It is troubling to me that Salon and this administration refers to these people as “Terrorist Suspects.” Suspects, really?!?! They have proudly admitted their acts and even demanded to be executed. Does that mean they deserved to be waterboarded? Let the debate rage. But in my mind their victims, if given the choice, would have accepted waterboarding and surviving to tell the tale over being crushed to death, burned to death, jumping from a building, etc.

The insensitivity shown by the CIA interrogators to those terrorists who were responsible for killing thousands of Americans is simply appalling!

It sounds like torture to me.

On the other hand, it extracted useful information.

On the other hand, suppose the guy didn’t know anything?

Should we be doing this?

If they do it to enemy combatants, will that set the stage for Janet Napolitano waterboarding “terrorists” like pro-Second Amendment people (WHERE ARE YOUR GUNS???), or anit-abortionists, or anti-globalists, or anti-illegal alien advocates?

I think this whole subject requires careful thinking.

Most detainees would choose the CIA and its water board over being shipped to an Egyptian dungeon where a blowtorch and a cattle prod would be used.

Not once in the entire article do they mention how many or whom this was actually performed on.
Hmmm, I wonder why...

I had to jump into a swimming pool with a full back back, and my rifle.
I had to then take off my pants, tie the legs in knots, and use my pants as a floatation device.
I had been a swimmer and scuba diver, prior to my service, and I could handle this, with only a little bit of water up my nose.
I was also able to help a few of my fellow Marines, who drank a bit more pool water, than me.

I was forced into a tent, and I had to take off my gas mask, and recite my name and my social security number forwards and backwards, before being allowed to put my mask back on, again. The tent was full of CS GAS!

Water boarding is acceptable, viable, effective treatment for any enemy of the United States, IMHO.

Even if you want to bring up Geneva Convention issues: the Geneva Convention allows us to SHOOT illegal enemy combatants, captured out of uniform!

The Geneva Conventions ALLOW that the “illegal” combatants may well be treated differently than the honorable, LEGAL enemy prisoner.
