The whole WMD thing in Iraq? Faked, in this leftist fantasia's telling.
Despite being guilty of gross insubordination, lying to his superiors and concealing important evidence from them (a notebook containing the addresses of Saddam's top officers), [Matt Damon's character] is the hero of the film.Wow.Others we're supposed to cheer for include Sunni officers who shoot down helicopters carrying American soldiers sent to assassinate them. Those death squads are acting at the behest of a duplicitous Pentagon intelligence mandarin (Greg Kinnear) who has single-handedly drummed up a fake casus belli.
Before the war, he interviewed a general of Saddam's who told him pointedly that there were no WMDs in Iraq after 1991 but that he'd be willing to work with the Americans after Saddam was deposed. The Kinnear figure then lied to a gullible reporter (Amy Ryan) that he had a rock-solid source, "Magellan," who had given him proof of WMDs in Iraq.
Such is this movie's eagerness to turn reality upside down that, although the Ryan character is obviously based on Judith Miller of The New York Times, the reporter is said to work for the Wall Street Journal. In full-on liberal daydream mode, Damon and his friends can pretend their favorite lefty paper is untainted by flawed reporting.
...
It's one thing to make a fantasy film laced with snarky jibes at the United States and its military. It's of another order entirely for an American studio (Universal, a unit of GE) to perpetrate, during an ongoing war, such vicious anti-American lies disguised as cheap entertainment.
"Green Zone" tells US troops that all of their efforts have been based on a deliberate deception. Worse, it blames the insurgency that has killed so many of our fighting men and women on US treachery.
Movies like "In the Valley of Elah," "Rendition" and "Redacted" have shown US forces doing nasty things -- but none went anywhere near as far as this picture in suggesting original sin corrupted the entire Iraq war and that American officials are more blameworthy than the insurgents for the most violent years. "Green Zone" isn't cinema. It's slander. It will go down in history as one of the most egregiously anti-American movies ever released by a major studio.
Matt Damon really needs to have his career taken away.
Wrong.
Obama's failures are the size of Arcturus, nevermind Pluto. I find it funny however that Obama's name is still red underlined on Firefox even though he'll go down in history as the 44th President of the United States.
You seem to have a lot of information, so I will toss out my theory, and maybe you could let me know if it’s at all plausible.
I have wondered if maybe Saddam thought he had the weapons. If you are an Iraqi scientist and you are workng for a person who puts people in wood chippers and whose sons have rape rooms and didn’t one of them totrute an entire soccer team when they lost a game? I sure wouldn’t want to have to tell them that due to crummy technology or lack of knowledge that I was not able to make the guy a nuke. I’d tell them whatever they wanted to hear. But again, maybe I’m totally off base just wondering.
According to Exhibitor Relations, which track box office sales, "The Great Raid" took in a mere 3.4 million. To put this in perspective, the sophomoric scifi gore-fest "Alien vs Predator, made 11 times as much last year and this weekend the sequel to "Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalo" made 9.4 million.
Half of the audience for "The Great Raid" was over 50. It seems that generations X and Y have no problem with blood, but have been deprived of a sense of honor and respect. Worse, the American populace as a whole, seems to have been worn down by two and half years of fighting in Iraq.
i could easily write a suspenseful, action packed, doomsday style movie set in the current day without much problem.
of course, it’d never be shown on an American screen...
as it would depict the wet dreams of our enemies.
Well, that would've been a show worth the price of admission. You'd be the cat (like a leopard or cougar) versus Damon as the dog (after all, he is a regular little piece of Shih Tzu).
You're a moron.
Of course Saddam had WMD.
He proved he had them.
He used them.
He was hanged for using them.
Then why was there a hijacker training facility at Salman Pak?
“Problem is, “W” did fake the WMD thing.”
I guess what you are saying is it does not matter that all of our intel agencies were convinced for years before the war that Iraq had WMD? It does not matter that politicians such as Gore and both Clintons were convinced Sadam had WMD and were saying the same things as Bush years before he became President? It does not matter that Sadam actually used chem weapons against his own people? All that matters is Bush lied, right?
Not a convincing argument.
Understatement of the year!
There is more hard evidence for WMD in Iraq than Obama’s healthcare would reduce costs, increase access and make Americans healthier...
Bush is only brought up by the “jerks” when they need to deflect attention from the monster they elected. As far as GW shooting first and asking questions later...that is a trait of someone who can immediately identify wrong and has the courage to correct it.
You left out avatar...
They’re coming to take me away, hey - hey
I can't make it fail. I don't have that power.
But I can, and will, deny it two tickets that a decent war flick would be guaranteed to sell.
The WMD thing didn’t start out as a fake, but it ended as a fake. By the time Bush had decided to invade Iraq, intel was coming back with no verifiable WMD’s. Saddam had done something with them. Didn’t matter. At that point, IRAQ was no longer about the WMD’s. Bush wanted to invade regardless. Later, he justified the Iraq invasion with some sort of convoluted doctrine about invading countries so you can turn them into democracies. WMDs weren’t even mentioned - not on the radar screen.
I won’t watch it, and it makes me sick that so many have.
