Mitch Daniels Offers Advice to Republicans
NY Times blogs ^ | March 9, 2010 | JEFF ZELENY

Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana offered a piece of advice to fellow Republicans: “Lay down the philosophical swords” to begin rebuilding the party and tackle the nation’s immense challenges. But he urged Republicans to not become too emboldened by the discontent in the electorate.

“Somebody said anger is not a strategy,” Mr. Daniels said in an interview today with editors and reporters from The New York Times. “We have to preach that in our own congregations.”

Mr. Daniels, who is in the middle of his second term as governor, said the politics of a midterm election year would likely prevent Republicans and Democrats from having a serious conversation about the future of Social Security, Medicare and other government programs. But those discussions, he said, should be included in the next presidential race.

While his name is often included as a prospective Republican candidate for president, he said repeatedly that he has no intention of seeking the nomination in 2012.

“I really don’t plan to,” Mr. Daniels said. “I really don’t much want to.”

For the future of the party, he said, Republicans should not become “wrapped around the axle” on social issues. He said the Tea Party has had a “net positive” impact on the political discourse by drawing attention to certain issues, but he warned against reading too much into the power of the movement.

I can only speak for myself since FR is by its nature a mixture of opinions.

To me, a Rino has always been a Republican who cannot or will not fight. We will always disagree with a pol on this or that, but if they refuse to battle the enemy, then what good are they?

Mitch Daniels knows the Dems are on the verge of victory with their 50 year obsession to steal our earnings and our private healthcare and he chooses this time to scold his side and the tea parties for their tone and philosophies?

Bad move, I am very disappointed.

They should be using the swords to turn Berry, Barney, Harry and Nancy into popsicles. We are in a fight for our survival against communist lowlifes who don't fight by the rules. The republicans are in this weakened position because they didn't pick up the sword and defend their beliefs.

It appears I’m the only one who thinks he means within the party when he says “Lay down the philosophical swords” to begin rebuilding the party and tackle the nation’s immense challenges?

I don’t think that what we should do, but I think that’s what he meant.

If Daniels is considered a RINO on FR...

It helps to understand that to the average denizen of FR, virtually everyone in the Republican Party is a so-called Republican in name only. It also helps to understand that anyone -- and I do literally mean anyone -- who doesn't think precisely like they do, talk precisely like they do and/or would, even breathe exactly as they do, is a "RINO" or worse.

You can not know how grateful we are that you have continued to drag yourself to freerepublic, and to post to we inadequate mortals, for almost 11 years.

He spoke at my nephew’s funeral and was not squishy in any shape, manner or form.

The folks at Redstate are pushing Mitch Daniels. George Will thinks Mitch Daniels is the ideal candidate to take on Obama.

While My Man Mitch has a record of accomplishments, his flaws are that he is 5’7” tall, plus he’s bald and boring.

Grow up. One hallmark of any individual's or movement's confidence and maturity is their ability to take and use constructive criticism without lashing out in all directions like an angry two-year-old.

When everyone is a "RINO," then the acronym ceases to have all meaning beyond being a tired, over-used, pointless epithet.

Yeah, there is nothing arrogant and self important about you at all.

Thank you for lashing out at me, I guess the frustration of having to show up here for 11 years and dealing with all we riff raff conservatives, is a terribly frustrating obligation for you to constantly force yourself to fulfill.

Thank you for lashing out at me...

Hey...your initial post to me was hardly the model of civility and decorum. Apparently you can't take as good as you give. Too bad. So sad.

Oh, and it's more than 11 years, not that it means anything or matters one whit. In the early days of FR, sometimes when there was a crash of the site or an update to the software, people would have to re-register. I first started posting on FR sometime around mid-1997, if memory serves.

As for being "arrogant and self-important," haha. I guess I'm about as self-important as you are dearie. roflmao

A bunch of people are keeping an eye on your man Mitch. He’s definitely in the top 5 as of now. It very well could be.
