Gov. Mitch Daniels of Indiana offered a piece of advice to fellow Republicans: Lay down the philosophical swords to begin rebuilding the party and tackle the nations immense challenges. But he urged Republicans to not become too emboldened by the discontent in the electorate.
Somebody said anger is not a strategy, Mr. Daniels said in an interview today with editors and reporters from The New York Times. We have to preach that in our own congregations.
Mr. Daniels, who is in the middle of his second term as governor, said the politics of a midterm election year would likely prevent Republicans and Democrats from having a serious conversation about the future of Social Security, Medicare and other government programs. But those discussions, he said, should be included in the next presidential race.
While his name is often included as a prospective Republican candidate for president, he said repeatedly that he has no intention of seeking the nomination in 2012.
I really dont plan to, Mr. Daniels said. I really dont much want to.
For the future of the party, he said, Republicans should not become wrapped around the axle on social issues. He said the Tea Party has had a net positive impact on the political discourse by drawing attention to certain issues, but he warned against reading too much into the power of the movement.

Keep an eye on My Man Mitch.
Never heard of this guy. Sounds like a RINO!
I have never heard of him. He sounds like a very wise man.
RINO Mitch is speaking!
One of the most conservative financial leaders in the Republican party. Squishy on some social issues, but rock ribbed financially.
Lay down the philosophical swords
That’s the worst advice I’ve ever heard. The American people are re-awakening to the necessity of constitutional conservatism and he wants to lay down the swords? WTF is that?
The SOB brought DST to Indy. I’ll never forgive him for that. But overall, he’s the best we’ve had in a while.
So, another rino.
A party without a coherent philosophy is a gang.
Exactly. The philosophical sword needs to be brandished at every opportunity. WHY is constitutional conservatism the answer for most things.
Troubling. Sounds like something McCain would say.
Sounds like he gave the NYT writer a wonderful interview.
I’ll neither knock him nor praise him at this early juncture.
So is "Ah-nuld" the Governator. Sorry, no deal. Mitch can take his moderation (actually disguised liberalism) and stuff it.
That’s what I’d vote for.
you think Schwarzenegger is rock ribbed on financial issues?
Daniels: Liberal RINO.
At least he knows he has no chance of winning the nomination. Daniels sold all the taxpayer funded toll roads to foreign companies.....he got Liberalism, Globalism, and Socialism all in one bucket.
Dismissing the Tea Party movement is Liberal RINOism
What’s wrong with daylight saving time?
I take it you don’t have young kids. I live west in the time zone too (Michigan) and daylight savings was great when my kids were playing soccer and Little League.
