The program is designed to look for indicators of cyber attacks by digging into all Internet communications, including the contents of emails, according to the declassified summary.

Homeland Security will then strip out identifying information and pass along data on new threats to NSA. It will also use threat information from NSA to better identify emerging cyber attacks.

So now they can read our email. They can track our cell phones and log the websites we have visited.

What if Bush had done these things?

What about texting? can they monitor those? If not, it wont be very hard for the terrorists to get around it, and our privacy is shot for nothing.

Well they are monitoring text messages in China...

http://www.xchangemag.com/hotnews/china-google-modern-comm.html

Text messages are being automatically scanned for certain keywords in an effort to root out pornography, salacious conversation and anything that violates the parameters for acceptable content that are decided by the central government. The central government, however, has not published what those parameters are, so consumers that want to keep their cellular service will likely keep texts more than a little innocuous on any number of fronts.

If a communication is flagged, the police will evaluate the text messages to determine with their own judgment if they violate the undefined “unhealthy content” rules. Human rights supporters have pointed out that the potential for the abuse of power is clear given the lack of codified guidelines.

I wonder how long it will take for that to happen here. Because we are in debt to china. It appears they are beginning to pull our strings everyday.

And in the UK:

State to 'spy' on every phone call, email and web search. Every phone call, text message, email and website visit made by private citizens is to be stored for a year and will be available for monitoring by government bodies.

Email Encryption Software & Text Encryption Software

It doesn't matter. For any encryption you might use, the gubment either has the keys or can break it.

I was wonder when that was going to be turned on. I guess the crazies were not that paranoid after all, as it turns out the government was listening to all of our communications. Time to start encrypting everything.

Interesting. I wonder if this is something I've heard referred to as Einstein 2. Back in October 2009, Jeff Moss (founder of DEFCON & Black Hat) had this to say about Einstein:

Moss: It’s [Einstein] the civilian governments defensive. It’s like their IDS (intrusion detection system). So there’s a technology road map. If you go to a government system or leave a government system you would pass through this Einstein system and so the idea is once you have everything in these TICs you can start to analyze flows and look for interesting patterns.

Hmmm, looks like I'm more than a bit behind. I found an article from July 2009 referencing AT&T running test of Einstein 3: Obama Cyber Monitoring Plan To Use NSA Technology

Maybe that’s because he issued the founding national security & presidential directives, initiated the programs and strategy and created the DHS?

it may be, I know I heard rumblings about ECHELON in late 90’s, as much as this administration likes to “rename” things I suspect it’s the same....with tweaks.
