SENATOR Scott Brown received his committee assignments from the Republican leadership on Tuesday, and it’s mixed news at best for Massachusetts. Brown is joining the Armed Services, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs committees - a lineup that General Patton might appreciate but one that doesn’t touch on many of the most vital domestic issues facing the country.

For much of American history, Massachusetts’ senators have played significant roles in the most vital issues of their times, emblemized by Kennedy’s crusade for health reform and his decisive role in judicial-confirmation battles on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Now, Massachusetts’ power is directed at defense and foreign policy - an important contribution, but a much-reduced portion of the Senate landscape.

He’s a freshman Senator he goes where he’s told, nothing special about being from Mass.....unless you can drive across a bridge!!!
It clear, however, that with the help of the Boston media, Brown's political opponents will make this an issue in his reelection campaign.
A Senator who has served in the National Guard for many many years belongs where exactly?
The areas where he has an informed viewpoint? That’s just common sense.
I have a news flash for boston.com. What YOU think doesn’t matter, he is a Republican and will be assigned according to what his party leadership decides, NOT the state he is from.

Why do you think the rest of New England calls them Massholes?
Well, he was a MA state legislator for the better part of 12 years. His ideas on domestic issues are just as informed as any of his ideas on foreign policy, or Homeland Security.
These assignments weren't based on his experience, but based on where he's least likely to break with conservative orthodoxy. Again, a smart tactical move by the GOP, for a change and it's probably what driving Boston.com so crazy.

He joined the Massachusetts Army National Guard when he was 19, receiving his basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and attending Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) classes at the campus of Northeastern University. He has been active in the Guard for about 30 years and has risen to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Presently serving as the Army Guard's head defense attorney in New England, Brown defends Guard members who have disciplinary difficulties such as positive drug tests and provides estate planning and real estate advice to those who are about to deploy to war zones.
Expressing regret that he will soon be forced to retire from the Guard, Brown has said: "I'm probably one of the most qualified soldiers in the entire Massachusetts [Guard].... I have enlisted service, I have infantry, quartermaster, JAG, I'm airborne qualified, I've been to all the courses." He has not served in Iraq or Afghanistan, but Brown said he was prepared to go if called. "I go where they order me to go... I'm just proud to serve and be part of the team." He spent ten days to two weeks for the Guard in Kazakhstan and a week in Paraguay.
He was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service in homeland security shortly after the September 11 attacks. He credits his military experience with causing him to focus on veteran's issues as well as issues of war and peace. He has served on the Veterans and Federal Affairs Committee, the Hidden Wounds of War Commission, and the Governor's Task Force on Returning Veterans during his career as a legislator.
Who said his experience didn't count, or that he wasn't qualified for the positions he was assigned? I certainly didn't.
What I said is that these are the committees that he's LEAST likely to disagree with the Republican leadership. And, to say that he wasn't qualified for those kinds of assignments is absurd as he was a state legislator for more than a dozen years.
These are also the kind of positions that Brown's self-proclaimed "independence" is least likely to rear its ugly head. This is the problem that Boston.com has with them.

I think you may be right to some extent, but please...his assignments were based on both his experience and the need to get someone in there who is not looking to arrest terrorists AND toe the line...and Boston has a problem because he is not working on something USEFUL to them...defense is the furthest thing from their alleged minds when it comes to importance...especially when you are conducting police investigations into a war.
You seem to suggest he is pure RINO and that was the ONLY motivation for his appointments and I think that is wrong...I reject that idea...I don't think that the Republicans are on a fully self defeating course at all times...in fact, this was an excellent set of appointments...just my opinion...respectfully, the temptation is to find fault with everything they do, and I do NOT think this is one of those cases. I thought it was a good tactical deployment.

Hahahahhaaa...yep...I find it worthy though to point out that Pubbies are sometimes wise enough to checkmate them...here’s hoping it was a smart move and Brown uses his history as a warrior to make some solid impact.
Sorry, perhaps I should have more carefuly chosen my words. I didn't mean to imply that he wasn't qualified for the positions he was assigned - clearly he is.
Nor do I mean to imply that he's a RINO, because (despite his most recent defection) I don't think he's that, either. But, he clearly holds some views, especially on domestic issues, that would cut against Republican/conservative principles.
I just think that the GOP leadership - smartly - was trying to maximize Brown's visibility (both Homeland and Judiciary can be VERY visible committees), while minimizing any damage Brown's independent streak can do.
