Is reconciliation the biggest problem in ObamaCare push?
Hot Air ^ | March 4, 2010 | by Ed Morrissey

Over the last few days, readers have sent a number of e-mails objecting to our focus on reconciliation as the big problem facing the opposition to ObamaCare. Reconciliation is just a ruse, they warn. The real danger is that the House will pass the Senate version of ObamaCare and that Barack Obama will sign it into law. The Senate doesn’t have to do anything at that point, except perhaps dodge the missiles tossed across the Capitol’s parking lot from their colleagues in the House after stiffing them on fixing their concerns.

That certainly has some truth to it. The House has had the option to do just that ever since the Senate passed its version in late December. The House can do that at any time during this session of Congress, which ends in December. They do not need to even put it through the committee process, but can bring it to the floor expeditiously — and Republicans have no way to stop it. If Nancy Pelosi ever decides to do that — presuming she can get the votes to pass it — Obama would surely sign the bill.

In terms of the Obama care bill, yes, the big danger lies in the House.

But in terms of the Constitution and the Republic, the big danger lies in “reconciliation.”

This is why the lame-duck session of Congress this coming fall will be a dangerous, dangerous time.

The big danger I see is if the House passes the Senate bill. If they do, then Obama signs that version of health care “reform” into law. Then that version is the law of the land, subject to reconciliation.

The danger is that the Senate bill becomes the new baseline, the new status quo. After that, if reconciliation gets bogged down in either House or Senate, the Senate bill is still the law of the land at that point.

They will have won without even going through the whole reconciliation process if the House passes the Senate version of the bill.

Yep, I fear a lame duck session going crazy. After election day, we’ll know if the Dems. will be losing their majority in Congress. After the election, it could be no holds barred as lame duck Democrats make their parting shots.

The House does not want parts of the Senate bill. They are being told by Obama that if they vote yes for the Senate bill Obama will sign it and the Senate will make good on their promise to write an amendment that would add and remove the pieces that Congressman do not want. The amendment would require only a simple majority to pass. However, if the Senate should decide to let their version of the bill stay as is an not amend it Obama has a nationalized healthcare bill but those congressman who expected the modifications will not get them implemented.
These congressman would have a difficult time explaining to their constituents why they voted for the Senate version.
If I were a congressman opposed to the Senate bill I would not allow myself to get taken in by this.
I do not think the House will get this Senate version passed.

THIS is the key paragraph from the article:

Pelosi, a member of the progressive caucus, made it clear that the Senate version was not acceptable and would not be the last word. She may change her mind at some point, but thus far, we’re not seeing much indication that enough of her Democratic caucus is willing to come along if she does. They’re only reluctantly proceeding with strategies to pass the Senate bill, conditional on passing a parallel bill that addresses their objections. The parallel bill is what would have to go through reconciliation, and now some Democrats have publicly insisted that the parallel bill would have to go through first. Harry Reid wants to use reconciliation to keep Republicans from filibustering the parallel bill and grinding the entire strategy to a halt.

Read that again: the parallel bill would have to go through first!!!!!!

There is NO WAY that can happen even with the corrupt Dems in charge. It violates all kinds of Senate Rules and probably several laws. But let them try. Plus the Republicans have the power to delay a bill like this moving through the Senate by endlessly offering up amendments, all of which have to be voted on. It is a DEAD END for the Dems.

“The real nightmare scenario isn’t that the House might pass the Senate bill now, or in April. It’s that Democrats might get stymied now, and then pass the Senate bill after the midterms in late November, and allow Obama to sign it into law well after the time when voters have held them accountable for their radical agenda.”

I’m not so sure about this. If I was thrown under the bus, I might not be too happy about it. I know that at least some of them will be very unhappy with the White House for ending their gravy train. I would be.

Pelosi and her evil band of radical leftists are lying their heads off and planting false stories about demands.

pelosi is a crooked real estate artist and knows how to bluff and tell bold face lies.

pelosi knows she is to ram thru the senator version and declare a victory for her radical moveon.org base and screw the suckers that fell for the scam.

Its a set up cooked up by hard core radical Marxists that run the WH and leadership.

Obama is hard core and nasty radical activist and
everyone is used to ram thru his radical agenda.
he will never triangulate .
A person that worked with him when he was a part time lecturer at U of Chicago law school said he
hated anyone that opposed his hard core leftist views and could not handle dissent and refused to listen to the other side .He was left of the other leftist law staff and he was NEVER a professor . he was never a tenured professor and worked only a few hours a week.
He is a psychopath.

I must admit, with all the wrangling going on, it's a bit confusing. Ed Morrissey was just on and I got the impression that particularly Pelosi but others too are taking this opportunity to consolidate their own power for what is sure to be a bloodbath.

And the GOP this fall can warn the American people about such a stunt. Let’s worry about the lame duck session later and focus on defeating the Senate bill in the House now.

I agree with those who believe that the House RATS are being set up as chumps. And, remember the Senate bill must be passed exactly as it is — with all the corruption - Cornhusker Kickback, Florida Gator-Aid, Louisiana Purchase etc etc.

House RATS have two nightmare scenarios if they pass the Senate bill:

1. the Senate won’t keep up its end of the bargain - content with their original bill

2. the bill gets slaughtered, delayed, and turned into swiss cheese by the Senate minority and reconciliation process — and/or the bill collapses in the Senate.

You read my mind. #2 is the one I’m really hoping for!

Actually the biggest danger is Obama and his gang of selected goons. Our president has an agenda of his own, and our country's well being isn't part of it. That man is a disaster waiting to happen.

Yes, if the House passes the Senate version unchanged (unlikely) it would be signed into Law.

The bottom line seems to be whether the house Dems trust Zero and the senate Dems not to simply throw out their changes to the senate version. They don’t want to draft changes and vote to promise their consent only to be thrown under the bus.

The anti-abortionist Democrats know full well that the Senate Democrats won't add anti-abortion language, the pro-abortionists won't accept it.

It also seems the CBO will have a chance at recalculating the cost of any changes before the thing can be signed into law. The whole thing is coming off as one giant slight of hand. In the end I think the Dem senators might want to hurt Pelosi.

Aeschylus would have a field day documenting the potential retribution coming their way.
