Second Ways & Means boss ousted; Levin replaces liberal Stark By Jay Heflin - 03/04/10 09:57 AM ET

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that Rep. Sander Levin will be the interim Ways and Means panel chairman.

Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) said Pelosi made the announcement at a meeting of the caucus this morning.

Etheridge said Ways and Means members gave their unanimous backing to Levin, a Michigan Democat who has been chairman of the subcommittee on trade.

"Pelosi announced it in the caucus and the Ways and Means Committee just unanimously approved it," Etheridge said.

The startling announcement comes a day after Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.) appeared ready to take the reins of the committee from Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.). Stark was the next in line for the post in terms of seniority, but some panel members revolted at the idea of him leading the committee.

Levin effectively becomes the panel's third chairman in a matter of 25 hours.

Stark said he wanted to remain as the chairman of the subcommittee on health.

"I worked my whole career on this, and I don't want to do that [become chairman]," he told The Hill. "So Sandy moves up."

Rangel announced Wednesday he would give up his chairmanship until the ethics committee completed an investigation of him.

Oh, okay, I thought he looked familiar. I wouldn’t count the Black Caucus out yet on this.

It becomes harder and harder for dems to please all of their different groups.

Did he try to raise taxes to 99% and triple spending in his first hour on the job?

Only for non union people

Levin on Ways and Means and Andy Stern on the supralegislative "deficit reduction panel"...can it get any better? Somewhere Jimmy Hoffa is smilin'. Now, if only the DOJ (Dept of Jihad) can get some more mafia lawyers busy rewriting anti-organized crime laws)

Ha-ha! That has to be shortest tenure as a Comittee Chair in American history.

I don't blame Pelosi for the decision though. Stark seems pretty close to certifiably insane.

One the few politically astute moves Pelosi has made as Speaker. I wonder who put her up to it?

Stark is a loose cannon with a lighted fuse yawing left on the deck of the Democrats sinking frigate.

I don’t understand. Why would a Rep who tells a reporter, “F-— you. Get out of my office before I throw you out the window” not be just the right guy to be a Dem chairman?

“Is this guy black? I heard the black caucus was pissed because a moonbat whitey was taking over for a corrupt black man.”

Nope. Sandy Levin is a cousin of the senator from Michigan, Carl Levin.

IF the roads there are any indication of the state government, you are so correct. I almost tore the suspension right out from under my Gold Wing motorcycle trying to make it up to the UP last summer. I don’t recall ever seeing roads so bad. They’re like roads you’d see in some 3rd world country. And I thought Louisiana roads were bad...LOL. They don’t hold a candle to those in Michigan!!!!

I'm confused. Was Stark ever officially seated as the Chairman or was he just passed over for Levin?

If Stark was just passed over, then he wasn't ousted. He was just bypassed.

Very confusing headline compared with the story.

The headline incorrectly implies that Sander Levin is NOT liberal. In fact he is consistently one of the most liberal members of the caucus.

Anyone believe ole' Petey on this one? If true, it would be the first time a lefty did not crave more power.

"Sander Levin will be the interim Ways and Means panel chairman"

More Democrat only rules. There is no such thing as an interim chairman. He's either the chairman or he's not.
