Michelle Obama said Wednesday that her year as first lady has allowed people to finally get to know her after the combat of a bruising campaign turned her into a “caricature” to some voters.
“As first lady, people see me more often, and they see me. They don’t see a caricature of me; they don’t see a sound bite of me; they see all of me. And even if they see a piece of me, they will see many pieces over the course of time, and that will fill out their view,” Obama said in an interview with POLITICO.
“I think people have gotten to know me and that’s something that I was always confident in.”
Obama is in the middle of her busiest stretch yet as first lady — a time when she hasn’t shied from talking directly about race and an epidemic of childhood obesity that strikes one in two African-American and Hispanic children. Race is a topic that makes some voters uncomfortable, but Obama said she couldn’t do the obesity campaign justice without confronting the problem head on.
And she defended President Barack Obama against charges among some in the black community that he doesn’t say enough about race. She thinks her husband says plenty.
“I think the president has had a lot of conversations around race that many presidents have never had, so I think both of us probably are engaged in a different way; people see us, hear us in a different way, that’s a given,” Michelle Obama said.
“I don’t think we ever shy away from it. I think it’s all a part of the bigger conversation, and when it’s important and relevant, we talk about it; and when it isn’t, we don’t. So I don’t think it’s as deliberate as some might think.”
