Fishermen rally in Washington against regulations

New England’s fishing activists, including a large contingent from Gloucester, headed to Washington, D.C. Wednesday, Feb. 24 to participate in the United We Fish rally.

Armed with their reasons why the regulations placed on the fishing industry should be re-examined, the Gloucester activists packed their day with meetings, and delivered their message to the open ears of Washington lawmakers.

Despite the cold temps and constant threat of rain and snow, a crowd estimated at 5,000 people attended the protest. “I was impressed with the rally,” said Jack Flaherty, a Gloucester fisherman who drove to D.C. with friends. “The biggest crowd was probably from Florida but I met people from as far away as Alaska and also ran into several Gloucester folks. It was a good turnout.”

Although the primary focus of the rally was about modifying the Magnuson Stevens Act, many attendees held signs stating that Jane Lubchenco, administrator for NOAA, should step down. NOAA both regulates the fishing industry and directs its law enforcement. The fishing industry has criticized NOAA for years about abusive treatment and fines against New England fishermen.

I suspect Washington D.C. will see many marches in the months to come for several anti government causes. It may become one continuous massive march.

Everybody else in the World is catching the fish our government won’t allow us to.

It only makes sense to the Left IMO.

It’d be nice to see the fishing industry get some results, cause this Lubchenco to get her walking papers and start getting our government to work with the industry instead of against it. Not holding my breath.

It was a quite an experience. Check out United We Fish on Youtube. Plenty of Gadsen flags flying in front of Chuckie Shumer and Bwaney Frank. Twenty eight pols spoke to a crowd of between five and seven thousand.

Schumer called on U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke, NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco, and NMFS Administrator Patricia Kurkul to issue an immediate moratorium on the flawed survey data used to implement recreational fishing quotas for the East Coast.

It’s very strange. This has been a growing problem for several years, even predating Obama, but now of course it has become much worse.

Personally, I think it really reflects the enviro-wackos at their wackiest: at heart, they’re the PETA types who buy billboards to make people feel guilty about eating fish. Somehow, these people have gotten into NOAA and all the other agencies and are using the excuse of “conservation” to put an end to fishing altogether, except among the Indian tribes of the Pacific Northwest, who seem to be permitted to do whatever they want. There’s nothing wrong with appropriate conservation, but as the fishermen point out, in the case of these particular species, there’s no need for extreme conservation measures and it’s really just an attempt to suppress the commercial (and sport) fishing industry altogether.
