OK, I can understand the bearded thing, but, come on, if he can’t see the only part of her body that IS visable - her eyes and they are crossed. Hard to believe.

In Ottoman Turkey, high-born ladies used the required coverings to escape detection so that they could engage in illicit assignations under the “protection” of escorting eunuchs. Perhaps, since eunuch slaves are no longer in plentiful supply, such behavior is no longer feasible.
As always, beware of unintended consequences.
