General Motors has blamed a supplier partly owned by Toyota for a faulty car part that led to the recall of 1.3m Chevrolet and Pontiac cars in North America.
Bob Lutz, GMs vice-chairman, on Tuesday told the BBC in Geneva that the supplier separately identified as JTEKT, a joint venture between Toyoda Machine Works and Koyo Seiko had not met all requirements for reliability and durability...
...GM announced that it was recalling 1.3m cars in North America due to a power steering problem linked to 14 crashes.
US regulators opened a probe in January into 905,000 Cobalt models in the US after receiving more than 1,100 complaints of power steering failures.
GM said the vehicles could still be safely controlled but greater effort might be needed under 15mph. Drivers would see a warning light and hear a chime if the steering failed.
JTEKT is based in Japan but has five manufacturing plants in the US. A call for comment to the companys US head office in Michigan was not returned.

The memo got lost, they’re supposed to blame Bush.
Blame Toyota - What a cowardly P.O.S.
Dear Leader promised transparency....and it is completely TRANSPARENT that that the obama government is trying to destroy Toyota’s reputation.
Yep, that has become as credible as “the excesses of the previous administration”..
I’m no GM fan, but it does seem likely that it’s the truth. GM and Toyota have been doing business for a while. The Geo Prizm was a rebadged Toyota Corolla. The Pontiac Vibe is a Toyota Matrix.
I remember whne we were kids and we’d always blame someone else. When does taking accountabilty/responsibility start under this administration?
If that's true, I wouldn't put it past the union or BO to have set this up.
The bottom line is that GM should have controls in place to test all product components whether internally produced or externally supplied.
And though this product might have been externally supplied, who designed it (probably GM). And was the problem with the design or did the supplier deviate from the design specs.
Give me a break. GM saying that others do not meet durability, etc standards is sort of like Gore saying he actually understands science.
You can always identify the Left in action. Rather than improve their product, Government Motors and their masters must level the playing field by reducing the competition. Regardless, Chevy’s are still POS.
Wow Obama thinks people really are sooo stupid they can’t see his ‘blame bush’ theory here....???
Obama motors blaming someone else for their problems. Who would have thought?
Ford and Toyota are going to do just fine after the assaults by Obama’s thugs and thug media.
Back in the 80's Toyota's image was tarnished by rust problem in the late 70's so they dialed up past 10(reference to Marshall guitar amps having a setting of 11).
I have a 1986 Toyota (daily driver) with 232,000 miles on it, still going strong.
I did have to replace some fuel line parts when ethanol came on line.
Yep, the CEO didn’t fall far from the one who appointed him. heh
What did Bart Simpson say?
I didn’t do it. Nobody saw me. You can’t prove it.
This is frakin hialrious...blame Toyota...yeah, that works.
GM is an utter failure and I am still waiting for their thrashing before a Congressional hearing on their 1.3 mil car recall... *crickets*
My BIL is a Toyota spokesman. Your DIL’s statement is correct. Toyota chose to take the high road and not point this fact out. Hopefully they’re learning that gentlemen’s rules of engagement are not viable when dealing with this administration.
