Bunning Accepts Deal Allowing Benefits Bill to Advance

Under increasing pressure from Democrats and members of his own party, Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) Tuesday night abandoned his one-man filibuster of a one-month extension to unemployment benefits and other programs.

In the end Bunning agreed to a deal allowing him one vote on an amendment to pay for the bill’s $10 billion cost. That proposal was offered by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) last Thursday at the start of his filibuster, but Bunning rejected it because he feared his amendment would not pass.

Reid has also agreed to give Bunning two votes on amendments to a larger, one-year extension bill that is currently under consideration in the Senate.

I guess they can’t figure out what “stop the out of control spending” really means.

The Democrats and Obama are bankrupting America.

Am I missing something, because this sounds like he won.

Is the amendment to declare PayGo a joke and to overturn it?

Is it paid for?
If not, any Repub that pushed Bunning’s into an agreement should be targeted and removed. Sick and tired of these weak-knee’d SOBs.

It was NOT a filibuster and this bodes ill for reconciliation in the Senate - if it comes back.

This was a refusal for unanimous consent. Bunning was not conducting a filibuster. Reid could have called for a vote at any time; rather, Reid wanted to score political points.

Reid also wanted to provide cover for his caucus so that they would not have a recorded vote proving that they are violating PAYGO.

The MSM are being deliberately deceitful in calling this a filibuster. It was NOT. And they are going to continue this dirty spin with health care.

I should think Bunning needs to come out and explain just how THIS deal accomplished anything he so loudly agitated for on the Senate floor for most of the last week...? I mean, unless I am missing something, this legislation is STILL not going to be lawfully funded, no matter HOW MANY voted Bunning is “given.” And, how can one senator have MORE than one vote anyway? Wait, rules do not apply to our Imperial Senate...Huh....

Many of FR will never understand....but when you are in combat you make decisions that make sense in the overall scenario. You have to weigh results versus losses. Something most of the mouthy folks at FR have never faced or refuse to try to understand! Trust me it's not an easy choice.

Senator Bunning,

This citizen and vet that happens to live in Vermont, stands with you 100%. Stop their spending cold, sir. The American people stand with you. Reject the compromise.

Obviously, there’s a lot more to this story than has been revealed in this brief article...

That’s why they call it Breaking News...
