PHOENIX (AP) -- Over the past several years, immigration hard-liners at the Arizona Legislature persuaded their colleagues to criminalize the presence of illegal border-crossers in the state and ban soft immigration policies in police agencies - only to be thwarted by vetoes from a Democratic governor.
This year, their prospects have improved. A proposal to draw local police deeper into the fight against illegal immigration has momentum, and even opponents expect the new Republican governor to sign off on the changes.
The proposal would make Arizona the only state to criminalize the presence of illegal immigrants through an expansion of its trespassing law. It also would require police to try to determine people's immigration status when there's reasonable suspicion they are in the country illegally.
An estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants live in the state.
"The greatest threat to our neighborhoods is the illegal alien invasion," said Republican Sen. Russell Pearce of Mesa, sponsor of the proposal, explaining that some illegal immigrants who are criminals bring violence and other crimes to the United States.
Supporters say the new rules are needed because the federal government has done a lousy job of trying seal the border and crack down on immigrants in the country's interior. Opponents say such new duties would be costly and lead to racial profiling.
The proposal passed the Senate two weeks ago, and a similar bill could come to a vote of the full House as early as this week.
Paul Senseman, spokesman for Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, said the governor doesn't comment on pending legislation but generally supports pragmatic immigration laws. Her predecessor, Janet Napolitano, a Democrat, vetoed similar proposals.

Crime has dropped in AZ in the last couple years.
And all of the illegals will flock to Utah, where the ‘locals’ welcome them with open arms. The fact that Ogden has gone from a dump to a war zone hasn’t detracted them, the fact that we now have violent Mexican gangs shooting innocents merely means that there aren’t enough ‘opportunities’ for them.
I honestly have no idea what it’s gonna take for this state to wake up, get a clue and take some action. Vandalism, Murders and rapes are not doing the trick.
and where are they gonna put them? The GOP has cut beds in both juvenile and adult corrections because they don’t have enough money to fund them.
Very good post Responsibility2nd,
Arizona is fast becoming the most illegal unfriendly state thanks to Napolitano getting the heck out of there.
Is that causing illegals to go to Texas, New Mexico and California in greater numbers?
Is it causing Arizna illegals cost to deminish and the others to expand?
I know here in Florida Ice is NON-existant, and we have NO Bad ass sherriff like Arizona does.
PRAISE GOD!!
Hodar,
You mean all the Vandalism, Murders and rapes can’t be attributed to those nasty local grown Mormans?
I was there a few years ago and the folks were as nice as anywhere I’ve ever been.
Huumm
when there’s reasonable suspicion they are in the country illegally
Would that start with the classic
“usted habla inglés”
“No hable inglés?”
Which seems to lead to the pro-forma
“usted está bajo detención - se carga el arma”
and the ever popular
“Exijo a un abogado” or “¿dónde está el ACLU?”
Of course, once the Policia apply the magic “Steel handcuffs of English” (not to be confused with Wonder Womans Golden Lasso of Truth) things get ugly....
What the Orwellian newspeak actually masks is the jurisdiction and non enforcement issue. Illegal immigration is a federal offense but the Feds refuse to do anything about it. So locals will.
Cheers for Arizona.
Will some AZ FReeper please ask Juan McAmnesty if he is on board with the AZ legislature on this and other state immigration measures?
Keep him on the hotseat during the primary.
This is gonna be a state law, not county. Sheriff Joe’s role will be only to house them in Maricopa County until they’re convicted in violation of this proposed criminal law. After that its up to the state and the state can’t afford it.
BTW, Sheriff Joe is only one of 15 county sheriff’s. This would bankrupt him and the rest of the 14 counties.
Policy is a ripple on economic tides. Don't get me wrong, I fully support what Arizona (and Phoenix in particular, my hometown now) are doing on this. But the ebb in illegals is being driven by the economy first of all.
Lots of room in the desert camps and on the work gangs. After all, they only came here to work, didn't they?
Agreed.
It’s like saying they are going to make illegal bank robbing illegal.
“Opponents say such new duties would be costly and lead to racial profiling. “
DUH! The Mexican border is right down the street. LMAO!
“Is that causing illegals to go to Texas, New Mexico and California in greater numbers?”
At least 40% of Arizona’s illegals have left since the new employer laws went into effect. They either went back to Mexico, or to Calibankruptia.
Sanity post of the day.
ROFLMAO!!
Now we have a so-called task force that will focus on illegals. But that has apparently been a joke, because we are being swallowed alive.
The local Liberal rags has a gem like this:
Sounds of up to 70 languages reverberate in school hallways, cantinas are sprouting in the suburbs, and Spanish-speaking religious congregations are multiplying scenes that are more Los Angeles and Miami than Salt Lake City.
Then we have this bit of 'good news' from the same source
Immigrants didn't flock here until the late 1990s as the state began preparing to host the 2002 Winter Olympics. Through much of the 1990s, non-agricultural jobs in Utah grew twice as fast as in the nation as a whole. A housing boom feeds the surge. Construction jobs grew 12.4% in 2005 and are expected to jump 15.3% this year.
About two-thirds of Utah's new immigrants came from abroad and the rest from other states, mainly California. The state's Hispanic population soared to about 270,000 in 2005, up 33.1% since 2000. Hispanics contributed about a quarter of the state's growth in the 1990s.
And finally, this is what our future looks like
Nearly 15 percent of all births in Utah are to immigrant mothers, a rate that has increased dramatically in the past 35 years, according to a new study.
Of those births, an estimated 47 percent are to mothers who are illegal immigrants, according to the study released this week by the Center for Immigration Studies, a Washington think tank that advocates stronger immigration controls.
