WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama said Tuesday he was open to four new Republican proposals on health care legislation, in a gesture of bipartisanship meant to jump-start his stalled overhaul drive.

Obama detailed the ideas, all of which were raised at a bipartisan health care summit last week, in a letter to congressional leaders. He also called for eliminating a special deal for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries in Florida and other states that drew criticism at the summit from Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.

The proposals Obama mentioned are: sending investigators disguised as patients to uncover fraud and waste; expanding medical malpractice reform pilot programs; increasing payments to Medicaid providers and expanding the use of health savings accounts.

As predicted, the “Summit” was a setup. All these are token gestures, notice the use of “pilot” for the tort reform. There is no room for comprise; either you believe in a consumer driven system or a government run system.

President Barack Obama has the votes in the House of Representatives to force his flagship reform of US healthcare through without Republican support, House speaker Nancy Pelosi has said. (AFP/Saul Loeb)

Not included: allowing purchase of insurance across state lines or tort reform. Also not included: any mention of scaling back or removing any part of the current proposals.

Any GOP’er who bites on this bait is a self-destructive idiot.

How about this idea? Scrap the whole thing; people don’t want health care reform.

pilot programs are not good enough, and you still have the government takeover of healthcare.

What about competition across state lines?
