MARCH 2, 2010 — GENEVA — General Motors Co is recalling 1.3 million compact cars in North America to address a power steering problem that has been linked to 14 crashes and one injury, the company said on Tuesday.

U.S. safety regulators opened an investigation on January 27 into approximately 905,000 Cobalt models in the United States after receiving more than 1,100 complaints of power steering failures. The complaints included 14 crashes and one injury.

The recall covers the 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 in the United States; 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico, GM said in a statement.

Toyota should sue the US Govt if they don’t have them.

We have a 2004 Malibu that has had this problem intermittently since we bought it new. The dealer has "fixed" it twice, but it still goes out occasionally, specially when the weather gets warm. Now the damn thing is out of warranty and they want $900.00 to fix it. Amazing that it is not part of this recall.

Does anyone know of any recourse I might have? I don't want to buy another car as this one is paid off, and is otherwise reliable, and economical.

This is a real shame, since GM was responsible, way back when, for one of the best power steering designs ever conceived: the Saginaw steering box. That design was so efficient that it was notorious for being able to peel itself off the frame of the early GM trucks under stress, and would never fail, unlike the various weak designs Ford had up until the late 90s/early 2000s.

I’ve owned Fords since I started driving. My current truck isn’t quite old enough yet, but every one I’ve ever owned previously has had steering issues at some point.

We won’t even get into the spark plugs that shoot out or the transmissions that only last 50k miles.

In the video, Lutz? says the the GM cars in question use the same electronic steering systems as Toyota, supplied by a Toyota owned part supplier.

Anyone know more about this?

“I’ve owned Fords since I started driving.”

My daily driver is a Tbird - 95 - couldn’t be happier. Lousy on gas (4.6 liter) but good ride and still humming. Dumping the other car when the lease is up - GM.

Since the government has taken over GM, all cars now steer to the left only.

Whoa, I've never heard of that happening, push rods yes, spark plugs no.

What is the defect that allows that to happen, I'm very curious to hear it, I can't even imagine what would allow it to occur

You got lucky on that one. Watch out for random spark plugs shooting out of the 4.6. That’ll really make your morning when it happens.

I guess it would...just replaced tires so far...had the engine rebuilt once to get a little of that old compression back, but that was strictly for fun.
