Hunter: "Vaughn is a combat veteran whose judgment, especially on national security, is critically needed in America's Capitol" October 7,2009

Former Congressman and 2008 Presidential Candidate Duncan Hunter Sr. will be campaigning in Boise, Idaho on Wednesday for Republican candidate Vaughn Ward in Idaho's 1st Congressional district.

Congressman Hunter (R-CA) served in the United States House of Representatives from 1981 - 2009. During the 109th Congress, Congressman Hunter served as the House Armed Services Committee Chairman. In 2008, Congressman Hunter ran for the Republican nomination for President.

"Vaughn is a combat veteran whose judgment, especially on national security, is critically needed in America's Capitol," Hunter said. "I am proud to endorse Vaughn Ward for Congress."

Hunter continued, "Vaughn has the experience and leadership to confront the most pressing issues facing Idaho and our country. He is a true conservative that will oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants, ensure we keep our second amendment rights, and fight to keep the government out of our daily lives. Vaughn is a strong leader who will stand up for our conservative values."

"Congressman Hunter is a leader who served our country admirably for over 40 years," said Ward. "I'm very grateful for Congressman Hunter's support.

Growing our Economy

The government should not create jobs - people should. I am committed to eliminating red tape and bureaucracy to keep the government out of the way of growing small businesses. The government’s responsibility is to promote economic growth by encouraging innovation and providing the necessary climate for businesses to invest in Idaho. That is why I support tax incentives for small businesses so that they can retain solvency and help encourage expansion.

Tax Relief/Reform:
Ward on Factory Tour

I am committed in the fight to protect Idahoan taxpayers, stop future tax increases, and preserve needed tax cuts. I will protect Idahoan taxpayers by permanently ending the Death Tax, repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax, encouraging working families to save more by establishing tax exempt individual development accounts, making the low tax rates for capital gains and dividends permanent, and preventing future tax increases.
Limited Government:

President Reagan said, “Government that governs least, governs best.” He was right. In these tough economic times, it is wrong for Democrats in Washington to further burden taxpayers and small businesses with their plan to increase the 2 million plus Federal workforce. As the size of the Federal government grows, inevitably so does its intrusion into our day-to-day lives. As our next Congressman, I will work to abolish wasteful spending and government programs so that Idaho families and small businesses can keep more of their hard earned money.
Jobs:
Ward on Factory Tour

Many Idahoan families are going through difficult times. Businesses are scaling back their workforce while others are closing their doors. The government has provided a safety net for those who fall on difficult times. But that is a short-term solution. In the long term, the best social program is a job. The best way to help Idahoan families is to support our small businesses - the real job creators. Every year, small businesses generate 60-80% of all new jobs. Healthy businesses mean healthy families. The people of Idaho want to keep our college graduates, young families, and most productive workers right here in the district. As your representative, I will fight for Idaho’s businesses and workers by opposing onerous regulations and taxation on our small businesses. The small businesses of the 1st district will lead us out of this current recession – not government.
Trade:

I will work for trade agreements and policies that focus on securing trade that is free, fair, and balanced. I will support free trade while continuing to push for fair trade practices from some of Idaho and America’s most important trading partners. I will fight against policies that will push jobs overseas. I will work to cut the cost of doing business in the United States by lowering health care costs, decreasing tax rates on American manufacturers, cutting down on regulatory and lawsuit costs, and making energy costs more affordable and more reliable. My roadmap legislation would level the playing field for American-made goods and services in the international marketplace. I will also continue to fight to ensure China is playing by the rules and not stealing American jobs.

Our Conservative Values
2nd Amendment:

As a life-long member of the NRA, I believe in the 2nd Amendment and the right of the people to keep and bear arms. The government should pass no law that restricts the right of any law abiding citizen to purchase, own, and legally use firearms.
Abortion:

I am a Pro-Life candidate and believe in protecting the right to life. I believe we have a responsibility to ensure that the federal government protects and defends an individual’s right to life, especially those who cannot defend themselves. We need to ensure that the government does not engage in promoting abortion. I also believe in promoting abstinence education.
Definition of Marriage / Family Issues:

I believe that strong families are the true strength of America. That’s why it is so important that our nation protect the lives of the most vulnerable, the unborn, and encourage loving families that choose to adopt children in need of a home. That’s why we must protect marriage between a man and a woman because we know children that are raised by a mother and father have the best chance to succeed. I believe marriage is the cornerstone to building strong families and communities and must be protected. Traditional marriage is an important foundation for creating a healthy family formation so children will be in raised in the healthiest of environments, setting the stage for their future success.

Health Care

My goal is to provide a health care system that allows access to affordable, quality health care for all Americans, in a way that ensures medical decisions are made in doctor’s offices, not Washington D.C.

First, we must fundamentally reform the tax code so that it makes sense for all people to have health insurance. Secondly, we must transform our health care model to one that is owned and controlled by patients.

Immigration:

A country that doesn’t control its borders doesn’t control its own destiny. That’s why any immigration reform plan must, first and foremost, protect and secure our borders. I am opposed to amnesty and any so called “pathway to citizenship” for individuals who enter this country illegally. The immigration system that we have today is broken, and we need thoughtful, common sense reforms that do not reward those who break our laws.

Preserving Idaho’s Natural Resources
Natural Resources:

The Federal government has control of over half of Idaho’s lands. I want to eliminate and ease onerous rules and restrictions on access to our own public lands. We must be good stewards of our public lands, but I also believe that our natural resources, like timber, on these lands can be harvested and re-grown in a responsible, common sense way that benefits all. Idaho does not need Washington bureaucrats telling us how we can use our land.
Agriculture:

Farmers don’t need Washington telling them how to farm. If we let them, the federal government will tax and regulate our farmers right out of business. From fuel to tractors, to the delivery of produce to our grocery stores, agriculture is an energy intensive business. The current cap and trade legislation puts an unfair burden on American farmers and risks putting farmers out of business and sending production overseas. Americans do not want the federal government micromanaging our farmers. It’s in all of our best interests for our farmers to thrive so Americans will not have to rely on foreign countries for food.

The War in Iraq

My background enables me to be uniquely qualified to help with our government's most fundamental responsibility - protecting its citizens.

I have served two tours in the Middle East since 9/11 with the CIA and the Marine Corps, witnessing firsthand the threat that terrorists pose to our national security. Our nation has not been attacked since September 11th. This is partially attributed to the fact that Al-Qaeda was dealt a serious blow in Afghanistan and Iraq by U.S. and allied forces. Now, as much as any time in our history, we need to be vigilant, united, and strong. I support strengthening and maintaining our military and ensuring that the men and women serving us in uniform have the best equipment and training available

Contrast Vaughn Ward’s stand on the issues with his primary opponent, Raul Labrador. Labrador is a pro-amnesty, former immigration lawyer, born in Puerto Rico, anti-American commie bastage pretending to be a Republican.

It should. The sad truth is that too many voters in Idaho don't participate in the primaries, and in many districts former Democrats from other states get on the ballot as Republicans, then get elected because too many voters just pull the lever.

The primaries in Idaho are most critical.

I asked him point blank. He said he would not be making an endorsement, because of longstanding friendships with both men, who both have campaigned for him multiple times.

He did however point out that JD is much more like-minded with him than McQueeg, especially on illegal aliens and globull warming.

Back in '08, when everyone was gnarling over Giuliani, Romney, McCain, and the guitar player, I was pushing Hunter. :)
