WASHINGTON (AP) -- Ten House Democrats indicated in an Associated Press survey Monday they have not ruled out switching their "no" votes to "yes" on President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, brightening the party's hopes in the face of unyielding Republican opposition.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi is struggling to secure enough Democratic votes for approval, thus the effort to attract former foes.
Obama .. is expected to embrace a handful of Republican ideas for making health care more efficient.
But persuading lawmakers to change their votes is a tough sell. Elected officials are loath to vote two ways on a controversial issue, feeling such a switch draws more resentment than support overall. Democratic leaders stress that the legislative package soon to reach the House will be less expensive than the one that passed in November ...
In interviews with the AP, at least 10 of the 39 Democrats either declined to state their positions or said they were undecided about the revised legislation, making them likely targets for intense wooing by Pelosi and Obama. Three of them - Brian Baird of Washington, Bart Gordon of Tennessee and John Tanner of Tennessee - are not seeking re-election this fall.
The others are Rick Boucher of Virginia, Suzanne Kosmas of Florida, Frank Kratovil of Maryland, Michael McMahon of New York, Walt Minnick of Idaho, Scott Murphy of New York and Glenn Nye of Virginia. Both parties have used the "reconciliation" strategy to pass big bills before, but Republicans call the health care push an unwarranted departure from standard practices.
Democratic leaders have asked colleagues not to use the term "reconciliation" but instead to refer to the process as "majority vote," said Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa. They also are frequently using the term "up or down vote."

The ObamaCare debacle is starting to look more and more like a Kamikaze mission for the ‘RATS.
Happy to oblige. I'll use "Wreckonciliation".
PORK SHOPPING!!!!
heat up the back room,
pelosi has some deals to be made.
Republican need to find their own flippers.
Theres probably at least 10 that will follow Stupak and switch to no. Hopefully.
We need to figure out when this Health Care thing died. That way we can have anniversaries of the day it died, like they do for Elvis. I could see reporters like the AP's Babington coming to the 25th and maybe even the 50th anniversary of the day it died. Olbermann will probably see it in grocery stores and at gas stations, traveling incognito but very much alive. We should ask the Mayo Clinic if they'll place the role of Graceland in this idea. |
Fact #1...Hussein is an utterly amoral Maoist whose wettest dream is to have *government* control health care, thus controlling the very *survival* of Americans.
Fact #2...There are lots...and lots....AND LOTS...of life-tenure judgeships,lifelong $250K/yr jobs at the EPA,the Department of Education,the Equal Opportunity Commission,etc.....
Add facts 1 & 2 and it becomes clear that they just might be able to pull this off....
This bunch can and will do anything for this.
That’s right. Be the little whipped boys and girls when your leader Pelosi cracks her whip.
History will make a note of this.
This Congress will be remembered for it’s cowardly conduct and how stupid they are.
Even now, these Democrat's statements certainly smack of, "What'll ya give me for it!?"

Does anyone think the fact that they are doing all of this for a bill that won’t be released until Wednesday?
The substance of the bill is secondary to the agenda. That is why there are Tea Parties.
the reporters are already using majority vote and straight up or down.
Obama and the Obamacrats are doubling down.
They’re thinking of voting for it after they voted against it, and it is the good intentions that count. They have no overall concept of what should be done and none of them will have read it.
I agree. ObamaCare is going to be rammed through regardless of the wishes of the American people. I don't think there is anything we can do to stop it. We'll end up having to take the whole mess to the Supreme Court.
Or a veto-proof majority to repeal it.
Yeah, that sounds like weak tea to me. I cannot imagine any Democrat who voted no last time deciding to vote yes this time without huge bribes.
Especially since Kent Conrad has said that any major changes from the Senate bill cannot be done by reconciliation.
As Conservatives, we need to start thinking about passage outside the box.
Being a congress person, relatively speaking, doesn’t pay all that well. I would not be surprised at all to find out that Pelosi is offering ‘buyout packages’ to representatives that will vote yes on the bill and get rich getting out.
I’m actually suprised I haven’t heard anyone in Conservative Talk Radio speculate on such a thing.
It goes back to a fundamental belief - there isn’t enough disincentives toward abusing your power in office. You don’t get re-elected? There’s another gig waiting - President of a University, K Street, Think Tank, etc.
Getting a Congress elected on deceit and then ramming legislation through that everybody hates is like a little kid changing the rules as soon as they get the ball.
