...it's time to ban marriages between first cousins and stop playing what he calls "genetic roulette" with their offspring.
Henry Heller, a Democratic delegate, or state representative, says he wants to bring Maryland "into the enlightened world of other states such as West Virginia and Arkansas" that already prohibit unions of first cousins...
The bill would make an exception for people who are over age 65 or infertile. Heller says he has "no problem" with those couples if they want the companionship.
There are 24 states that prohibit marriage between first-cousins.

No wonder family reunions in Maryland are so well attended by singles...

So much for this being a southern thing.
Years ago I remember hearing the teaser for the local nightly news saying that they had a story about “A man, his daughter, and their 7 children. Film at 11”. I stayed up that night.

Codification that child-bearing is the primary purpose for the State “licensing” marriage.
This woould effectively kill any and all pleas to same-sex marriage.

I wonder if this was an ironic jab at WV and Arkansas, since using them as symbols of the "enlightened world" strikes me as being funny. (No offense intended to WV and Arkansas)

There are 24 states that prohibit marriage between first-cousins.Meaning that 26 permit it. No one has yet demonstrated an increase in stillbirths or genetic defects in first cousin consanguinity.

I find it ironic that this article, appearing just above a CNN hit piece that tries to claim that liberals have higher IQs than everyone else, points out that the Democrats are having to pass laws to stamp out inbreeding among their base.

There are plenty of incestuous business relationships in DC...

Meaning that 26 permit it. No one has yet demonstrated an increase in stillbirths or genetic defects in first cousin consanguinity. Not sure about that. Over in Britain, the Muslim population from Pakistan routinely engages in first-cousin marriage and has demonstrated a statistically significant higher level in all kinds of genetic disorders and mental retardation.

Kentucky and West Virginia should pass this law. I would not think that Maryland would have this problem. Ok throw in Alabama too. lol.
