The 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Chile early on Feb. 27 was 500 times stronger than the 7.0 quake that killed an estimated 200,000 Haitians last month. And yet the number of casualties in Chile appears to be exponentially smaller, with the official death toll still in the hundreds. Far fewer people were rendered homeless than in Haiti, and much of the telephone service in Santiago and parts of central Chile had been restored within five hours.

“Really improving”?
You must be talking about a different Iraq. The libs were right for once.
I know it’s not important, but does anyone else think it sounds silly for people with completely American accents to suddenly begin pronouncing Chile as Cheelay? I realize it’s likely how it is pronounced there, but it sounds kind of ridiculous. It was sort of funny on Fox because initially one of the female anchors was saying Chile, and a little later I noticed her saying Cheelay, like someone had said, “Hey, you sound like an American, stop that!” ;)
I've never been to Chile but I *have* been to Australia and it's hard to imagine Chile being *nearly* as good.Save up your nickels and dimes and go there. You'll see what I mean.
Would you believe protection for the unborn is IN their constitution?
Very,*very* commendable. But they'd still be protected whether I was there or in Oz.That's my attitude.
Chile does not have anything as good as the USA second amendment, but Chile is still miles better than Australia when it comes to gun ownership.
“Chile is the best run country in Latin America, thanks to Pinochet.
Haiti has always been a disaster and a welfare state.”
Where’s the “that’s racist” .gif? I need a copy of that. I do find it interesting that the media is not out there whoring for Chile like they were for the western half of that island in the Caribbean. I find that racist. If it is people descended from Africans they do back-flips and telethons, but if it is people descended from Spainiards and Native Americans, not a word so far.
To any of you with people in Chile, I hope your family and friends survived and are finding some clean water to drink.
Reminds me of the Iraq War. All of a sudden Qatar was being pronounced “Cudder” by the news anchors.
I know. And Tollyban and Pahkistahn et al. I think they believe it makes them seem worldly and elite.
I liked Chile too...if someone told me I was exiled to South America for life with my family ...I would pick Chile...without question.
I’ve lived in several of them....second place would be Argentina
I like Colombia best but it’s too dangerous.
Chileans after Argentina are the most Caucasian of latin America (since all the Cuban peckerwoods left and came here)
and you are right..the media says ho-hum...we want more color and bodies too of course
It aggrivates me to no end that these people live in a third world country while sitting in a virtual paradise. They have lands for agriculture, pristine beaches for potential tourism (parts of Haiti does use the cruise ships for tourism) but the citizens act like they are flailing in the wind when it comes to governing themselves.
Anyone with any brains has left Haiti. What is left is not very smart.
What?...they don't need movie stars treating them like pets?
What?...they just need a helping hand up?...not a hand OUT?
If we annexed Haiti, would we spend more money, both in government aid and private donation, than we do now?
If we annexed Haiti, at least we would gain more oversight in how the money we give them is spent.
Chileans are either white or mixed white/Indian, FWIW.
